NFL Sportsbook Picks – Bears To Embarrass Giants On Sunday Night Football

October 4, 2010

Even though the Chicago Bears are the only undefeated team in the NFC, they can’t seem to get any damn respect in the NFL sportsbook.

The Bears have posted big wins over Dallas and Green Bay, but are still walking in to the Meadowlands this weekend as a +4.0 road dog against the New York Giants.

I have my doubts about Chicago, but I have way more when it comes to Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin.

Manning has posted the most interceptions this season (probably because Jake Delhomme got hurt) with six, and his Giants have also given up 10 turnovers. That’s probably the worst stat to keep in mind when you consider that the Chicago Bears are a team that loves to produce takeaways.

Great teams are solid through the three phases of the game, and Devin Hester’s presence on the kick-return squad gives Chicago incredible balance. Say what you will about Jay Cutler, but he’s coming in to his own after struggling in his first season while making some mediocre receivers look pretty damn good.

The Bears are undefeated in their past five games but are just 4-8 ATS in their last 12, and just 3-8 ATS in their past 11 games when playing on the road. Even still, we’ve seen this Bears team on the road against Dallas and they won 27-20.

This game, however, isn’t solely about what Jay Cutler is capable of. From a production standpoint, it’s a safe bet that him and Eli Manning will virtually put up the same numbers. The problem that Cutler won’t have is facing an insanely talented defense.

Chicago Bears (3-0) vs. New York Giants (1-2)

I wrote in the preseason that I was nervous about Chicago as a stealth bet in the NFL sportsbook because of their defense. For whatever reason, nobody seemed to remember that Brian Urlacher was hurt all through last year.

With Julius Peppers caving in pockets for him up front, Urlacher is reminding us of his all-world ability, like when he caused a game changing fumble that allowed the Bears to march down the field and win the game.

That same defense is in a position to give Eli Manning an absolute nightmare of a game. The Bears have the best rush defense in the league allowing a belittling 39.7 yards per game on the ground, but that really wont’ matter since Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs haven’t really been that great anyways, and their production won’t improve with Tommie Harris playing like it’s 2006 again.

Without being too concerned about the rushing attack, the Bears can drop back in to coverage and harass Eli Manning with coverage sacks, batted passes and perhaps a few untimely picks. For the New York Giants to be successful in the NFL sportsbook this weekend, they’ll have to put up points and I just don’t see them doing much more than banging away a field goals.

Seriously? The Giants as home favorites in the NFL sportsbook? Please. New York is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games at home.

The Chicago Bears are slowly but surely making believers out of me. They remind me of the same team in 2006 that went to the Super Bowl, and with Hester returning punts like the good ol’ days, while also being a threat on offense, Jay Cutler and the Bears will fight and earn the respect that they rightfully deserve in the NFL sportsbook.
