NFL Sports Book – Patriots vs Chargers
October 22, 2010
It’s time to head over to the NFL Sports Book and make your wagers for the weekend. One of the most exciting games on the schedule comes from San Diego, where the Chargers will host the Patriots late Sunday afternoon.
New England Patriots (4-1 SU, 2-2-1 ATS) at San Diego Chargers (2-4 SU, 2-4 ATS)
Sunday, October 24: 4:15 p.m. CBS, Live from Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA
NFL Betting Odds:
New England: +2 ½
San Diego: -2 ½
Total: 47 ½
For San Diego, this certainly hasn’t been a conventional year for Norv Turner’s squad, as after years of dominating the AFC West, they’re just 2-4, and trailing Kansas City in the standings.
Despite their record though, San Diego is still able to move the ball, and once again has one of the most potent offenses in the league. Currently, they lead the NFL in total yardage, averaging 432 per game, with their passing game tops in the league as well. The Chargers are still blessed with one of the best signal-callers in the sport in Philip Rivers, who currently leads the league with 2,008 yards through the air, and is tied for second with 12 touchdown passes.

Not to be outdone, the Patriots enter this one with an excellent passing game of their own. It’s never a good idea to bet against Tom Brady and New England in the NFL Sports Book.
After a bit of a down year in 2009, Brady has returned to form in a big way this season, leading this high-powered Patriots attack. New England tops the NFL in scoring with over 30 points a game, and as usual it’s because of the man calling the shots. Brady is completing an impressive 67.5 percent of his passes, and has thrown for 10 touchdowns already this season. Those numbers are even more impressive considering two peripheral factors. One, New England traded their best playmaker Randy Moss to Minnesota two weeks ago. And second, he’s getting virtually no help in the running game. Neither of New England’s leading rushers has a 100 yard game yet this season.
So as you get set to wager in the NFL Sports Book, what this game ultimately comes down to is defense. In the end, we’re going to say to take San Diego Chargers.
Looking at the stats, the Chargers really are one of the strangest teams in the league right now. Currently, they rank No. 1 in total defense, allowing opponents just 255 yards per game, and are No. 1 in passing defense as well. However, they’re in the middle of the pack in scoring defense, allowing 22 points per game. At some point, those numbers have to meet closer to the middle right?
At the same time, there’s no mistaking New England’s defense for years past, this group is just plain bad. They are allowing 383 yards and 23 points per game, both of which rank 25 th or worse out of the 32 teams in the NFL. More concerning is the pass defense, which is getting carved up to the tune of 273 yards per game.
In the end, expect both quarterbacks to have a big day, but for San Diego’s Rivers to have a bigger one against this struggling New England Patriots secondary.
The pick to make here is the Chargers. Go ahead over to the NFL Sports Book and place your wager.
NFL Sports Book Pick: San Diego -2 ½
