NFL Sports Book – Colts Struggle to Defend Title

December 5, 2010

Looking at the NFL sports book for this week, we can see that the Indianapolis Colts are in a struggle to defend their AFC South division title, as they are deadlocked with Jacksonville with five games to go. This makes their appointment with the Dallas Cowboys a very critical matchup, and these two will meet up at 4:15 PM ET on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium (artificial turf) in Indianapolis. This will be the fourth game for Dallas’ interim coach, Jason Garrett, and his Cowboys are a five-point underdog in the NFL sports book odds, with the total on the game posted at 48 points.

Dallas made the move to get rid of Wade Phillips and it looks as if turning to Jason Garrett provided the kind of spark that could bring out better performances from this team. Does Jerry Jones wish he would have made the move sooner? There may be a few people betting in the NFL sports book (with wagers on the Cowboys) who wished he had. Dallas is doing almost everything better than it was before, and that includes running the ball. Marion Barber may be out for this week, but the Cowboys have Felix Jones and Tashard Choice to handle the burden. They’re in much better shape physically than the Colts are, even if they are able to bring back Joseph Addai, who has been sitting with a neck injury but has participating on a limited basis in practice.

Here are some of the trends as they impact our NFL prediction on this game:

·         Dallas has played its last eight games OVER the total
·         Dallas has lost six of its last eight games SU
·         Dallas has covered four of its last 12 games
·         Dallas has lost four of its last six road games SU
·         Dallas has covered two of its last six road games
·         Indianapolis has won 17 of its last 25 games SU
·         Indianapolis has won 19 of its last 22 home games SU
·         Indianapolis has played four of its last six home games
·         Four of the last six meetings have gone UNDER the total

You don’t want to ignore the fact that the Cowboys have covered all three games they’ve had in the NFL sports book since Garrett took the reins. After defeating the Giants and Lions rather decisively, they gave New Orleans a scare on Thanksgiving Day and now have had a few extra days to prepare for this one. Jon Kitna has suddenly sprung to life under center, with six TD passes and just two interceptions in the last three games. Peyton Manning is going to be effective most of the time, regardless of who is catching the ball, but he does have a banged-up receiver corps and a running game that is ineffective when it isn’t being ignored.  I wonder if the Colts, with their obvious problems on defense, as they allow 4.9 yards a carry, are that capable of creating a lot of distance. If these Cowboys are still playing as if they are highly motivated (and there’s no reason to believe they’re not), they can take this to the wire. So it’s Dallas plus points in the NFL sports book odds.
