NFL Props Betting – NFC South Win Total Odds
August 19, 2009
The NFC South was an almost literal, knock-down, drag-out fight last season with the Carolina Panthers taking the division title with a stellar 12-4 regular season mark, beating out the upstart Atlanta Falcons, one of the league’s biggest and best surprises in 2008, by just one game.
With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers posting a positive 9-7 record last season and the New Orleans Saints going 8-8, the NFC South was one of just two divisions in all of football, along with the NFC East, to have all four teams record .500 or better records.

Carolina Panthers
Over 8½ Wins -175
Under 8½ Wins -125
Analysis: The Panthers (12-4 SU, 9-6-1 ATS, 8-8 O/U) open with Philly at home, followed by road games at Atlanta and Dallas and then a bye and 0-3 is very possible even for John Fox’s hard-working team.
Carolina then hits the road for three of its next five at Tampa Bay, Arizona and New Orleans with home dates against Washington and Buffalo and I like the Panthers to go 3-2 during this stretch. Two tough home games follow with Atlanta and Miami visiting followed by a road date at the Jets and I think the Panthers could possibly win all three of these games.
Home games against Tampa Bay, Minnesota and New Orleans, along with road games at New England and the Giants, make for a treacherous final stretch, but I think the Panthers manage to win three of those games to reach nine wins, sending them just Over their set O/U total here.
NFL Pick: Over 8½ Total Wins
Atlanta Falcons
Over 8½ Wins -115
Under 8½ Wins -115
Analysis: This pick is a piece of cake unless you think the Falcons (11-5 SU, 9-7 ATS, 7-9 O/U) are going to backslide in a big way, something I just don’t see happening, despite having a very tough regular season schedule.
The Falcons open with Miami and Carolina at home, both very tough games, followed by a road date at New England and a BYE in Week 4. Atlanta could seriously be 0-3 by this point, though I think 1-2 or even 2-1 would be a bit more realistic.
Atlanta then hits the road for three road contests in its next four games, with tough games coming at Dallas and New Orleans, preceded by games at San Francisco and home against Chicago. A 2-2 mark over these four games sounds about right.
Things don’t get easier when Washington visits, followed by road games at Carolina and the New York Giants. A 1-2 mark over these three games would put Atlanta at four or five wins and I have them at five wins.
The Falcons finish with three home contests (Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and New Orleans) followed by games at the Jets, home against Buffalo and at Tampa Bay.
With four of their final six at home, I like New Orleans to go 4-2 during the stretch giving them a minimum of nine wins and the Over for this wager.
NFL Pick: Over 8½ Wins
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Over 6½ Wins +105
Under 6½ Wins -135
Analysis: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7 SU, 8-8 ATS, 8-8 O/U) open at Dallas, followed by a road game at Buffalo, a home contest against the Giants, road contests at Washington and Philadelphia and home dates against Carolina and New England and I think the new-look Bucs may very well be looking at a 1-6 mark heading into their Bye.
Things don’t get much easier with Green Bay visiting, a road game at Miami, New Orleans at home and road games at Atlanta and Carolina, a stretch I think the Bucs will be hard-pressed to surpass 2-3.
Tampa Bay finishes at home against the Jets, at Seattle and New Orleans and at home against the Falcons, a span I think they’ll go 2-2 in.
While I’ve got the Buccaneers taking a big step back in 2009 at four or five wins, I think it wouldn’t be unreasonable to see Tampa Bay eke out six wins. However, I just don’t see the Buccaneer surpassing their Over/Under total here BetOnline NFL betting members so I say take the Under.
NFL Pick: Under 6 ½ Wins
New Orleans Saints
Over 9 Wins -115
Under 9 Wins -115
Analysis: The Saints (8-8 SU, 10-5-1 ATS, 10-5-1 O/U) opens with Detroit at home followed by road games at Philadelphia and Buffalo and then a home game against the Jets and then a bye and I think the Saints could be 3-1 at this point – if everything goes right.
Things get tough for the Saints in a big way following their bye, as the Giants visit then the New Orleans hits the road to see Miami followed by home games against Atlanta and Carolina in what looks like a 2-2 stretch.
New Orleans travels to St. Louis and Tampa Bay before hosting New England, a likely 1-2 span. The Saints finish at Washington and Atlanta, followed by home dates against Dallas and Tampa Bay and a road game at Carolina, and I like New Orleans to manage three wins during this stretch, putting them squarely at nine wins and making this wager a push. While it’s quite possible the Saints reach 10 wins in 2008, it’s also possible they could post another 8-8 record as well.
NFL Pick: Push
