NFL Prop Odds – Will Reggie Bush Lose His Heisman?

September 7, 2010

The New Orleans Saints are +900 to win the Super Bowl in the latest NFL prop odds; will their big-play running back, Reggie Bush, be stripped of his Heisman Trophy? The rumors have been strong about the trust that governs the award taking actions against him in that regard, and a report published on the internet has stated that to be a fait accompli. Is that indeed the case, and if so, will that be a distraction for this team that is -160 to win its division in the NFL prop odds? We’ll discuss.

Yahoo Sports has reported that Reggie Bush will soon become the first Heisman Trophy winner in the award’s 75-year history to be stripped, and that it will remain vacant instead of going to the next highest finisher.

Bush, of course, received illegal benefits during his tenure as a USC football player, and it has resulted in sanctions against the school’s program, which have made the Trojans ineligible for the Pac-10 championship as well as any post-season play. The football writers also stripped USC of its 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy. Coach Pete Carroll, who may or may not have known that anything was going on, fled the scene and landed in Seattle, where he is coach of the Seahawks (+275 to win the NFC West in the NFL prop odds).

Pat Haden, the Rhodes Scholar who was named USC’s new athletic director in the wake of Mike Garrett’s ouster, returned the school’s cop of the Heisman that Bush had won and suggested that the running back should do the same. Bush clearly isn’t going along with it.

The Yahoo report says that the action will take place by the end of September. By that time, the Heisman Trophy Trust will have met, and a decision will have been made. They have not necessarily set a timetable for such a decision, nor would there seem to be a necessity for it.

Mack Brown, the coach at Texas, has suggested that the award should not be made vacant, but that Vince Young should be given the Heisman, by virtue of the fact that he finished second. "I think you have to go back and really give that choice to the Heisman Trust. If they take it away, I think Vince should be awarded the trophy," the coach said on a radio show.

Young, now playing with the Tennessee Titans (+1400 to win the AFC in the NFL prop odds) has said that he really didn’t want it, despite the fact that he’s be the eligible player with the most votes. The margin, however, was huge; Bush had an edge of 784 to 79 in first-place votes.

ESPN may have been caught with its pants down on this report, however. While they did not break the story, and indeed attributed it to Yahoo, they placed a lot of weight on it, and then one of their own announcers, Chris Fowler, came on SportsCenter to claim it was false; that no such decision had been made, and that members of the Heisman Trust he had talked to had no idea where the Yahoo writers go their information from. However, Fowler also pointed out that there would be a regular meeting this month, which would allow for such discussion to be conducted and a decision to be made as pr the timetable described by Yahoo.

The Saints are priced at +900 in the NFL prop odds to be a repeat Super Bowl champion, and Bush, who caught 47 passes and rushed for 390 yards last year, is a spot back who sometimes lines up as a wide receiver. He scored two touchdowns in the post-season. He is expected to be  key player on Thursday night as the team opens its season against the Minnesota Vikings (who are +150 to win the NFC North in the NFL prop odds) in the Crescent City.
