NFL Preseason Odds – AFC South Appears Status Quo
August 1, 2010
The Preseason Odds are out and predictably, the Indianapolis Colts are favored once again in the AFC South. However, the AFC South appears to be an improved division with Houston, Tennessee and Jacksonville all making strides toward improvement. Will it be good enough to unseat the mighty Colts?

Indianapolis Colts: -150
The Indianapolis Colts will return most of its 2009-2010 roster, one that was at or near the top of the NFL in almost every offensive and defensive category (except for rushing, but who cares about that – right?).
The Colts will be at the top of the league in passing again this year. Peyton Manning, a healthy Anthony Gonzalez, Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon and Dallas Clark still make up arguably the best passing in the NFL. The one hole is the rushing attack but I think Addai and Brown will be better this year.
The defense added Jerry Hughs, a very good defensive end, to an already superb O-line. Bob Sanders is back healthy – count on 6-8 games before he gets injured!
To think that the Colts won’t win 11-12 games is ridiculous. I can’t see any other team in the division getting 12 wins.
NFL Preseason Odds Pick: Indianapolis Colts -150 are a lock to win the AFC South.
Houston Texans: +350
It’s playoffs or bust for the Houston Texans on 2010. If not for a few last minute blunders in three of their games last season, their record would have certainly be better then 9-7. This is a team to watch out for – they should be good for 10-11 wins and if Indianapolis gets unlucky (Peyton Manning getting injured for instance); the Texans could steal the division. NFL Preseason Betting Odds are pretty attractive if you are looking for a dark horse.
Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and a healthy Owen Daniels should produce once again. A rededicated and healthy Steve Slaton and Ben Tate should provide an OK running tandem.
Mario Williams is still the corner piece of the defense. His health is critical. With the addition of cornerback Kareem Jackson, the Houston defense should be OK.
The Texans could be that team that sneaks up on everyone this year. They do have a tough schedule and they do have Indy in their division. But if you want to throw down on an underdog, you could do worse.
NFL Preseason Odds Pick: Houston Texans 10-6 at worst and Second Place in the AFC South
Tennessee Titans: +350
It is hard to believe that the NFL Preseason Odds have the Tennessee Titans at equal odd as the Houston Texans. They did win 8 of their last 10 game last season but they still don’t appear to be a playoff team.
Vince Young will lead an unspectacular group of receivers into this season praying that Chris Johnson’s contract dispute will rectify itself. If Johnson takes a ½ step back this season, the Tennessee offense is average at best.
When the Titans were a threat to the Colts, they had a dominant defense. Those days are gone! I think the NFL Preseason Odds have overvalued the Titans just a bit.
NFL Preseason Odds Pick: Tennessee Titans 9-7 and Third Place in the AFC South
Jacksonville Jaguars: +1000
The Jacksonville Jaguars are the weak cousins of the AFC South and the NFL Preseason Odds reflect that. They did nothing to speak of to improve a poor passing game and a below average defense.
NFL Preseason Odds Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars 6-10 and Fourth Place in the AFC South
Indianapolis is clearly the class of the AFC South and NFL Preseason Odds prove that. Barring injury, they will win the division. Watch out for Houston to pounce if there is any adversity in Colts-land however.
