So far, it’s been rather easy picking spots to back and fade Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers this season. Head coach Norv Turner’s outfit enters its Week 6 clash with the Rams 2-3 SU & ATS on the year. The two wins, SU & ATS covers in the comfy confines of Qualcomm Stadium. The three defeats both in the W/L column and against the closing pointspread have all come on the road.

After thrashing Arizona at home in Week 4, the Chargers invaded Oakland looking to secure their first win as a visitor in the 2010-11 NFL predictions season. That opportunity went up in smoke quickly however, as the Raiders special teams gave the home team a quick 12-0 lead on a blocked punt that led directly to a safety, a FG, and another blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.
San Diego looked to have righted the ship taking a 17-15 lead with it into the break before stretching it to nine almost halfway through the 3rd quarter, but the defense simply ran out of gas allowing Oakland to retake the lead late in the 4th quarter. A questionable fumble recovery and return for a TD prevented Rivers from pulling out the comeback; the loss snapped their 13-game winning streak against the Raiders.
St. Louis entered its Week 5 battle with the winless Lions very optimistic. Oddsmakers gave them a heck of a shot of winning as well with them going off the board as just three-point NFL predictions underdogs.
It just wasn’t meant to be however, as the Lions took advantage of three Rams turnovers and got huge plays from their special teams to trounce the visitors by a 44-6 final tally. Though the Rams offense was the bread winner on the day outgaining the Lions 341-322, it came up grossfully short on the scoreboard.
Thankfully they get to return home to their comfy confines where they stand 2-1 SU and ATS with a pair of outright wins over the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks.
NFL Insider Tip: If ever the Chargers are to get back to its winning ways on the road, the Rams are the perfect opponent to do so against. For it to finally do it, it has to stop screwing up on special teams and limit turnovers. If it does that, the offense should be way too much for the Rams to contend with in this Week 6 NFL predictions match-up.
Scoring has been tough for the Rams all season long, as it’s averaged just 16.6 PPG (#27) and averaged a total of just 318 YPG (#20). Making that chore all the more tougher this week is the fact that Sam Bradford will be without his most reliable weapon, Mark Clayton, who is done for the year after tearing his patellar tendon last week. Once he was carted off the field last week, the Rams simply had nobody available to stretch the field on the Lions defense. With that being the case once again this week, look for the Chargers to pin their ears back and bring all sorts of pressure.
Call me a glutton for punishment, but I’m going right back to the well with the Chargers who I think takes the Rams out behind the woodshed on Sunday. San Diego simply killed itself last week and will enter this NFL predictions bout with a much lesser Rams team very conscious of the fact. Look for Turner’s squad to squash any hopes the Rams have of winning this one from the onset and move to a perfect 7-0 ATS its L/7 following an ATS defeat and 6-2 ATS its L/8 following a SU defeat.
My NFL Predictions: San Diego Chargers (-8) -110
