The Green Bay Packers were pre-season NFL Playoff Picks to be in this very position but some sloppy play and close losses has relegated them to a road Wild Card game in the City of Brotherly Love. Green Bay has suffered four straight Playoff losses – Aaron Rodgers will be searching for his first post season win on Sunday.
The Packers have been virtually one dimensional since they lost Ryan Grant in the first game of the season. Aaron Rodgers has guided the team to the 5th best passing offense (257.75 yards per game) while the running game has been mired in the bottom third of statistical categories. Make no mistake about it however; the Packers are dynamic on offense. They will score against Philadelphia – it is more likely a matter of how the defense plays that will determine the outcome of this game.
The Green Bay defense has been terrific all season long. Although statistics don’t jump off the page, they did hold their opposition to and NFL 2nd best 15.00 points per game. They are fast, aggressive, smart and relentless! The 5th ranked pass defense has Rod Woodsen as an anchor and the 18th ranked run defense and pass rush has the defensive player of the year, Clay Matthews as its leader. Teams fear the Packers defense for good reason!
The Philadelphia Eagles, at the half way point of the season were a NFL Playoff Picks favorite of many but injuries and two straight home losses to end the season have some thinking otherwise. Michael Vick is apparently 100% heeled and is ready to do what Donovan McNabb couldn’t do for Phili. – win the Super Bowl! Nobody expected much from the Eagles this season but strangely a loss on Sunday would be a colossal disappointment.
The Philadelphia offense is Top 10 in passing and rushing. Michael Vick and his 676 yards combined with LeSean McCoy’s numbers have the Eagles with the 5th ranked rushing offense in the NFL. Vick’s passing has the team 9th with an average of 243.94 yards per game. You want weapons? How about McCoy, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Brent Celek? The Philadelphia offense is as deep and as potent as any offense in the land. After all, they did average the third most points in the league this season – 27.44 per game.
The Philadelphia defense is still seen as formidable but they are a far cry from what they have been in the past. They were 14th against the pass this season and 15th against the run. The confident Packers offer up a different type of challenge however – the Eagles defense’s job will be to just keep the game close!
NFL Playoff Picks Outlook:
The Green Bay Packers are 2-3 SU in their last five games and are 2-5 SU in their last seven games on the road. They are 2-5 SU in their last seven against Philadelphia and are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 versus the Eagles. In the Packers last eight games in Philadelphia; they are 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS. Green Bay is 0-4 SU in their last four playoff games and is 2-6 ATS in their eight in the post season.
The Philadelphia Eagles are 6-3 SU in their last nine games and are 13-6 SU in their last 19 games at home. They are 5-2 SU in their last seven games against Green Bay and are 7-1 SU at home in their last eight versus Green Bay. The Eagles are just 1-4 ATS in their last five games as favorite.
It appears as if the league`s defensive coordinators have finally figured out a way to play the “new Mike Vick”. Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers has tape for the Eagles game against the Giants, Bears and Vikings to study. All of those teams had success limiting Vick`s effectiveness. Green Bay has a terrific defense and a great offense. The Pack will score in this game and I am not certain that the Green Bay defense will bend enough to allow the Eagles to keep up. The Packers win but not because of their offense in this one. In a surprisingly low scoring game, I like the underdog road team.
