NFL Playoff Betting with Props – New York Jets at San Diego Chargers

January 17, 2010

Sunday, January 17th – 4:40 PM ET

Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego

NFL Point Spread: San Diego -7, O/U: 42

The New York Jets ran rough shed over the Bengals last week, crushing Cincinnati 24-14 in the Wild Card opener. The Jets did everything right in that game. They ran the ball hard, with rookie Shonn Green gaining 135 yards and scoring a touchdown.

Their defense shut down Carson Palmer, restricting the former Pro Bowl quarterback to just 146 yards passing. They also kept the ball out of Mark Sanchez’s hands for most of the game, allowing him to throw just 15 passes. Their domination last week has many pundits suggesting an upset over the Chargers.

Easier said than done. San Diego finished the season on an 11-game winning streak and own one of the most prolific offenses in the league. They have so many weapons on offense it’s nearly impossible to cover all of them at once.

Although ranked 20th overall for the season, the Chargers defense ranked 12th during their current win streak and has steadily improved all season.

What The Jets Have To Do To Win

The Jets beat the Bengals on the ground, and if they want to beat San Diego, that’s how they’ll have to do it as well. Green’s breakout game last week was a nice surprise for a team that already boasted the league’s number one rushing offense.

Playing against a Chargers defense that has allowed an average of 4.5 yards per rush works in New York’s favor. In regards to Sanchez, a similar game plan to the Cincinnati game is in order as well. The Chargers secondary isn’t amazing, but it is capable of making big plays and creating turnovers. Even if the run isn’t working at first, the Jets have to stick with it. Sanchez just isn’t good enough to win a game on his own, especially in a hostile environment like San Diego.

What The Chargers Have To Do To Win

First and foremost, the Chargers will have to contain the Jets rushing attack. During their current win streak San Diego has defeated teams with potent ground games (i.e. Tennessee and Dallas), so they know they can be successful. Otherwise, Philip Rivers and company will just have to do what they do best: score. Top receiver Vincent Jackson will probably be guarded all game by star cornerback Darrelle Revis, but luckily for Rivers, there isn’t a soul on the Jets that can successful cover Antonio Gates. Gates was a monster for San Diego this season, setting a career high in receiving yards and reestablishing himself as one of the best in the business. A big day by Gates will likely equal a win for San Diego.

Outlook & Pick

The Jets are the sexy pick of the divisional round, and why not? They have the “nobody-believes-in-us”  factor going for them; they have a rookie quarterback; they have a coach that everyone loves. But they’re not facing the Bengals on Sunday. They’re facing a hungry, motivated, and most of all healthy Chargers team. Rivers, Gates and LaDainian Tomlinson have never been this healthy at this point of the season. Sorry Jets fans. Your ride ends here.
