The Chiefs opened New Arrowhead Stadium with a huge 21-14 win over the Chargers. The young Chiefs defense was all over the field, pressuring Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers all game, sacking him twice and forcing a fumble.
The Chiefs top five tacklers in the game were Derrick Johnson (12), Eric Berry (6), Glen Dorsey (6), Tyson Jackson (6) and Brandon Flowers (4), who are all recent Chiefs first round draft picks. The play of the young defensive core is a relief to the Chiefs faithful, who had their doubts whether the team was going in the right direction.
The coup de grace came when the Chiefs stopped the chargers on a fourth a goal with under a minute left in the game.
Running back Jamal Charles burned the Chargers for 92 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown dash. First round draft pick, Dexter McCluster made an immediate impact in his first pro-game by returning a punt 94 yards for a score.
The only sore point for the Chiefs in week one was the play of Matt Cassel who just completed 10 of 22 passes for 68 yards.
The Cleveland Browns dropped a very winnable game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-14. Their new quarterback Jake Delhomme continued the bad play that run him out of Carolina. He threw a game away with an interception that led to a Bucs touchdown and back into the game. So much for the best quarterback in Browns2.0 history.
Against the Chiefs, the Browns will be in trouble. The Chiefs defense is hungry and with first rounder Eric Berry showing he’s “NFL ready” at safety. They will force the Browns into turning the ball over multiple times.
The Chiefs are a definite sleeper pick to win the AFC West and against the Browns, it looks like Kansas City will win this game straight up.
NFL Betting Pick: Kansas City Chiefs +2
