NFL Picks – Giants Try To Bounce Back From Historic Loss By Visiting Green Bay

December 26, 2010

The New York Giants are coming off the most embarrassing loss we’ve seen this season in NFL picks. Blowing a huge lead against the Philadelphia Eagles, then botching a punt and allowing DeSean Jackson to dance his way across the endzone – quite literally – has everyone writing the Giants off.

The truth is that they’ve been here before, and the result was a Super Bowl championship.

There’s still a lot to like about the Giants, but what has always been at the head of their chart in my books is the solid coaching of Tom Coughlin. The fact that he took responsibility and protected Matt Dodge (the punter responsible for kicking to Jackson against Philadelphia) is proof that he knows how to win over a locker room.

Very often, NFL picks are graded in large part on how a team responds to their coach, and despite what guys like Tiki Barber say, the Giants thrive off of Coughlin’s hard nosed coaching style. It doesn’t work for some, but when he gets the roster of players he wants, everything clicks in New York.

That’s why you can’t fall asleep on them in NFL picks just because of the deflating loss to Philadelphia. As they head to Green Bay, the focus shouldn’t be on New York’s collapse, but more so on their ability to put Aaron Rodgers in danger.

New York Giants (9-5) vs. Green Bay Packers (8-6)

Sunday, December 26th — Lambeau Field — 4:15pm EST

NFL Betting Line: Green Bay -3.0 (43.0)

Rodgers suffered his second concussion of the season, and will be back on the field this weekend after being cleared by doctors. The Packers have fallen just outside the playoff bubble but can win out to make the playoffs, so they have everything on the line in what has simply been a disastrous season for them.

The issue for them in this game is ultimately pass protection. There’s a reason he’s been blasted for two skull crushing hits this season. What do the Giants do excessively well? You guessed it – rush the passer. That’s a big reason why you should be siding with the Giants in your NFL picks.

Listen, what they were unable to do against Vick is completely unique. If you break down the pocket on a guy like Vick, he can step up and break out for huge gains. The fact remains that no matter how mobile any quarterback is, they’re not Michael Vick and Aaron Rodgers will be just as nervous about knocking himself out for the rest of the season as he breaks out of the pocket.

Green Bay is 4-2 ATS and they have an advantage of playing at home, but the Giants are also 4-2 ATS when playing on the road and you can’t underestimate just how focused they will be to prove that last weekend wasn’t a proper representation of their team play.

No matter how much you like the Packers overall, this is not their season. They’ve been able to survive, and their defense is very good, but they’re not equipped for major comebacks like the Eagles are. Don’t sell the Giants short in your NFL picks, especially in Week 16, because you will regret it.
