NFL Picks – Belichik Gets Another Crack At Mangini

November 5, 2010

It’s no secret that Bill Belichik has had it out for Eric Mangini, and that makes the tilt between the New England Patriots and the Cleveland Browns a simple NFL pick in Week 9.

The Patriots have thundered to the top of almost everyone’s charts with the league’s best record overall. While Mangini would love nothing more than to put a dent in their sterling record, he has a fat chance of doing that with his quarterback issues.

The bad blood between Mangini and Belichik goes back to the infamous “Spy Gate” scandal, where Mangini revealed the fact that New England had spies filming games in the stands to give Belichik a different angle to see the action. The reason Mangini knew this is because he is one of his former assistants, and he revealed this little nugget after his Jets lost to the Patriots back in 2006.

Not too many people have taken the Browns in NFL picks this year, despite wins over Cincinnati and New Orleans. While the fans are getting a good look at rookie quarterback Colt McCoy, running back Peyton Hillis is becoming a big reason to watch any Browns game for their fans.

Speaking of which, the fans in Cleveland have their own reasons for hating Belichik. He was the final coach at the helm before the first version of their franchise packed up and moved to Baltimore in order to create the team we now know as the Ravens (the Baltimore Colts had moved to Indianapolis many years before and the city rallied to garner a new franchise).

There are many levels of intrigue for this matchup from a drama standpoint. No fan base hates Belichik more than Cleveland, and no coach pisses off Uncle Bill more than Mangini. Still, if you’re betting on NFL picks, you don’t just go with emotions – you bet with your head.

New England Patriots (6-1) vs. Cleveland Browns (2-5)

Sunday, November 7th — Cleveland Browns Stadium — 1:00pm EST

NFL Betting Line: New England -6.5 (43.5)

This has been a miserable matchup for the Cleveland Browns in the past. They’re just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games at home against New England. Straight up, they’ve lost 5-of-6 games in this series as well.

Everything begins and ends with Peyton Hillis when it comes to taking the Browns in NFL picks. The 240-pound powerhouse has averaged 4.4 yards per carry and certainly has the strength to overwhelm the Patriots while opening up a few passing lanes for the Browns. But that doesn’t necessarily negate the fact that New England ranks 12th in the league in terms of rush defense. They only allow 101.6 yards against and Hillis has not breached the 100-yard mark since Week 4.

In fact, breaking down this game in NFL Betting picks comes down to a much simpler stance: Belichik and Brady won’t take it easily on Mangini. Blowing Cleveland and a shell shocked McCoy out of the water is definitively on their minds this weekend.

A lot of people may take this as a game where Cleveland picks up points in garbage time, but the Patriots will be relentless for sixty-minutes on Sunday and Mangini’s boys will have to suffer because of it.

Ultimately, betting against the Patriots is bad for your health. It’s not like the oddsmakers have been off about the 3-4 ATS Browns this season, and New England has gone a blistering 4-2-1 ATS so far. That’s why your NFL picks should include the Patriots with a great number.
