NFL Odds Pick – San Francisco at St. Louis

December 26, 2010

After a topsy-turvy season, both the 49ers and Rams now find themselves with a chance to still capture the NFC Betting West title.

The winner of this game has a great shot to make the playoffs and the 49ers have the edge in terms of feeling like they have nothing to lose after starting the year out with an 0-5 record.

Can the 49ers make good on their owner’s playoff prediction following their winless start and put themselves in position to win the division?

San Francisco 49ers (5-9) at St. Louis Rams (6-8)

1 pm Sunday

Football Betting line: Rams favored at -2 ½

In any other division, the season would be all but over for these teams but instead they will battle in St. Louis for a chance to make the playoffs.

The Rams are a game up on the 49ers and tied with Seattle, and they’ve gotten to their current position in large part because of their running game led by Steven Jackson.

The QB situation has been solid although rookie Sam Bradford, the number one pick this season heading into the year, has tapered off and shown his inexperience recently.

He made some key mistakes last week in a loss and will have to be better, but the Rams do play well at home.

The 49ers will be the NFL odds underdogs and likely turn to Troy Smith who has been underwhelming.

He likes to throw deep but the Rams have a smart secondary that plays above their talent level and a solid pass rush as well.

For SF to win they will need to use the whole field and throw short and run to keep the pressure off of Smith.

The Rams aren’t likely to allow that, however, as their defense is tough and well-schooled.

The NFL odds favorites should have a leg up in this one as long as Bradford plays within himself.

This is a close game on paper in every way but the Rams are the home squad and that counts for a lot in a game between two teams that aren’t title-worthy yet find themselves in such a tense situation and a white-hot spotlight.

The Rams might start a rookie QB but Bradford is no ordinary rookie and he will make just enough plays to get it done.

NFL odds pick: St. Louis Rams (-2 ½).
