NFL Odds – San Francisco vs Kansas City

September 26, 2010

If you ask anyone outside of Kansas City if they expected the Chiefs to be 2-0 heading into their Week 3 game against the 49ers, the overwhelming answer would be no way. The 49ers, on the other hand, had the best NFL odds to win the NFC West but they sit at 0-2. These two teams meet Sunday afternoon at the newly renovated Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The NFL odds makers have set the 49ers as the -3 point favorites. A straight up bet on the underdog Chiefs will pay bettors +120 on the moneyline. The game total is set at 37 points.

The Chiefs have won both their games with excellent defensive play. They upset the Chargers in Week One with excellent blitzing which effectively put Philip Rivers off his game. Then against the Browns, the defense was there again as Brandon Flowers intercepted a Seneca Wallace pass and returned it for a touchdown.

The Chiefs defense has covered for an ineffective Chiefs offense. In the first two games, the offense has only moved the ball an average of 254.5 yards. Matt Cassel is the 30th ranked passer in the league. In Week One, Cassel only managed 68 yards against the Chargers. Against the Browns in Week Two, he threw for 176 yards but threw two interceptions. He seems to be having trouble adjusting to new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis’ offense.

The Chiefs defense will need to be at their best to stop the San Francisco Sunday afternoon. Even their best may not be enough against San Francisco.

Seattle blew out the 49ers in Week One but in Week Two they showed the potential that had the NFL odds makers favoring them to win the NFC West. Against the New Orleans Saints, they held the Super Bowl Champions to just 287 yards, which is about 120 yards below their 2009 average.

Offensively, the 49ers quarterback Alex Smith had one of his best games of his career against the Saints. Smith completed 23 of 32 passes for 275 yards and throwing a touchdown. He brought the 49ers back from 8 points down in the final minute of the game to tie the Saints.

Frank Gore set a 49ers record with his 21st 100-yard rushing game. He ran for 112 yards, caught seven passes for 56 yards and scored two touchdowns.

The 49ers are a desperate team as a 0-3 start could leave San Francisco with too much of a hole to climb out of in the NFC West. New Arrowhead will be a madhouse but a quick score by the 49ers could take the crowd out of the game early. I’m a big believer in the Chiefs this season but unless Cassel finds his form against the 49ers, their luck is likely to run out.

NFL Betting Pick: San Francisco 49ers -3
