NFL Odds – Packers Have Opportunity To End Favre’s Shot At Another Super Bowl

November 20, 2010

A Super Bowl champion and future hall of fame quarterback, Brett Favre returned to the Minnesota Vikings this season for one last run at the biggest prize in the sport (which NFL odds makers thought would happen). But after a tumultuous first half that has included a fractured ankle, harassment allegations, and just three wins through his first nine games, Favre and the Vikings are on the verge of having that dream disappear.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Sunday November 21, 2010 – 1:00 PM ET

Mall of America Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Broadcast: FOX

NFL Odds: Packers -3, Vikings +3

Total: 44

Minnesota welcomes Favre’s former team, the Green Bay Packers, to Minneapolis this Sunday for an NFC North showdown. Green Bay is 6-3 and tied with the Chicago Bears at the top of the division with Aaron Rodgers under center, and will have the chance to push the Vikings one step closer to elimination.

NFL Odds : What The Packers Will Have To Do To Win?

The Green Bay Packers had won three straight games heading in to their bye week, including a 45-7 route of the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago, While the passing game has been strong, Green Bay’s last two wins have come while allowing a combined seven points. Overtime losses to the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins have held the Packers from pulling ahead of the Bears in the NFC North. However, if the defense can provide another solid performance and get to Favre in the pocket to force the issue, Green Bay should be able to extend their winning streak to four. That they did have the extra week to prepare for this game is significant because the Packers are dealing with injuries. Both defensive end Ryan Pickett and linebacker Clay Matthews were held out of practice this week, but could be available. Matthews has 10.5 sacks this season.

NFL Odds : What The Vikings Will Have To Do To Win?

Favre was intercepted three times and sacked once the first time these teams met, a 28-24 Vikings’ loss that pushed their record to 2-4. The 41-year old beat his former team on both occasions last season, but will need running back Adrian Peterson and the tenth-ranked rushing offense to step up if Minnesota Vikings is going to be able to get back on track. The Packers have done an excellent job collapsing the pocket in recent weeks, and with a hobbled Favre in the pocket protection assignments will be key. The Vikings rank in the top ten on defense against both the run and pass, but will have to be better than the 28 points they allowed in the loss to Green Bay earlier this season.

NFL Odds : Outlook & Pick

The irony would be overwhelming if the Packers were able to get to Favre and give him that one last hit from which he couldn’t continue playing. The reality is a Green Bay win on Sunday will push Minnesota one step closer to elimination, and that may be sweet enough revenge for Packers’ fans.

NFL Odds Pick: Packers -3
