There weren’t many people who saw the Miami Dolphins coming, but perhaps they should have. Remember that two years ago, the Dolphins, battling steep NFL odds, were the AFC East champions, admittedly in a year when Tom Brady was injured and Brett Favre led a Jets collapse down the stretch, but champions nonetheless. They were there because of fundamentals, and a "get tough" attitude promoted by the new football boss, Bill Parcells, and his hand-picked coach, Tony Sporano.
Last season, with a first-place schedule and an injury to starting quarterback Chad Pennington, Miami slipped to 7-9 SU and they were out of the playoff picture. Now they’re back, or at least that’s what it looks like, and they have won their first two games, rather impressively and both on the road, in the NFL odds. Going to Buffalo and beating the non-offensive Bills was one thing, but defeating the Vikings and Favre in Minneapolis was quite another.
Here are some of the trends as they impact the NFL odds on this game:
- New York has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
- New York has won eight of its last 11 games SU
- New York has won five of its last six road games SU
- Miami has played six of its last eight home games OVER the total
- Miami has covered one of its last five home games
Here are some of the head-to-head NFL betting trends regarding the NFL odds:
- New York has won 17 of the last 24 meetings SU
- New York has covered nine of the last 13 meetings
- Four of the last six meetings have gone OVER the total
- New York has won four of the last six meetings SU as the road team

Ironically enough, the Jets (+165 in the NFL odds to win the AFC East), who were the subject of the reality show "Hard Knocks," which focused on their training camp, would have been a more interesting subject for a reality/soap opera-type program after the season started. We’ve now witnessed an embarrassing offensive display in the opener, where many in the media were calling for Mark Sanchez’s head, not to mention the season-ending injury to Kris Jenkins, a hamstring injury to Darrelle Revis which will keep him out of the lineup, an incident involving a self-promoting, scantily-clad female reporter that got them in hot water, and now a DUI arrest of Braylon Edwards. Rex Ryan screamed to his team the other day – "Enough is f***ing enough."
It’s really not certain how much all of that will affect the way the Jets perform against the NFL odds on Sunday night, but I imagine it can’t help them all that much. Now Rivas can’t be of any help in covering Brandon Marshall (12 catches, 124 yards, for example). And Vontae Davis’ job becomes a little easier as Edwards will not start and Santonio Holmes is still under suspension. We forgot to mention that center Nick Mangold is hampered by a shoulder injury. Hey, do you think Jake Long is going to let ex-Dolphin Jason Taylor (who’s got an elbow injury) get to Chad Henne. Not a chance. Miami insists it can run the ball on the Jets, even though New York has yielded just 1.8 yards per carry. Let’s see Mark Sanchez (52%, 5 TD’s, 8 INT’s career on road) repeat his three-TD effort in this environment, the most hostile he’ll find. We’re going to go with the Dolphins minus the points in the NFL odds on Sunday night.
