Carolina suffered a heartbreaking loss last week when kicker John Kasay’s 42-yard field goal missed the target in the closing seconds. The Panthers 24-23 loss at Cleveland was their fifth straight defeat. One positive in the loss was the return of the Panthers running game, as Carolina rushed for 151 yards with Jonathan Stewart gaining 98 yards on 12 carries. NFL odds and stats show the Panthers rushing for 101 yards per game this season; down over 50 yards per game from last season.

Carolina rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen continues to struggle, averaging just 110 passing yards per game, 50 percent completions and one touchdown pass against five interceptions. Teams know he can’t beat them through the air, as he also throws for a low 5.6 yards per pass attempt.

Seattle’s run defense has really fallen off without defensive end Red Bryant (out year) and defensive tackle Colin Cole (ankle) out of the lineup, as the Seahawks have allowed an average of 141 rushing yards per game the last three contests after last week’s domination by the Chiefs when Kansas City rushed for 270 yards. NFL odds show Seattle playing in the league’s worst division and the Seahawks have allowed 485 yards or more in four of their last five games.

On offense, the Seahawks running game has been grounded recently. Seattle has rushed for 58 or fewer yards in four of their last five games. As Seattle continues to struggle along the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, it is not wise to lay points and especially a touchdown on this week’s NFL odds.

NFL Insider Tip: The Seahawks are 4-20 ATS as home favorites off a double-digit ATS loss, including 1-12 ATS in non-division duels. The Panthers are 13-2 ATS in December as underdogs off a loss.

Seattle’s injuries on the defensive line and secondary have them ill equipped to deal with a power running game, and without wide receiver Mike Williams (foot), the offense suffers as they can’t open up the field. Their beleaguered offensive line took another hit when center Chris Spencer was KO’d (leg). The losing Panthers look like they can play their second consecutive competitive contest and cover the NFL odds in this spot.

My NFL Predictions: Carolina Panthers (+6) -110
