NFL Monday Night Props – All Manning, No Favre

December 13, 2010

As we look at the NFL Monday night props for the game that will take place at Ford Field between the Vikings and Giants, we see that Brett Favre is not a part of the menu, but Eli Manning is.

As you probably know by now, this game was originally scheduled for the Metrodome in Minneapolis, but because the weather has made the Vikings’ building unplayable, it has been shifted to Ford Field in Detroit, where it will begin at 7:20 PM ET. One of the NFL Monday night props has the over-under on Manning’s passing yards at 250.5, with the prop going -115 either way.

Well, there may not be a Brett Favre in the lineup for Minnesota on Monday (although we have seen stranger things happen), but there IS Eli Manning, who unlike Favre was an MVP of the Super Bowl. In the NFL Monday night props, Manning’s numbers look like this:

NFL Monday Night Props

ELI MANNING – TOTAL PASSING YARDS

Over 250.5 yards  -115

Under 250.5 yards  -115

Manning comes into this encounter with the Vikings averaging 248.5 yards a game. Last season he threw for 251 yards per contest. Over the last four games that average has dipped to 227 yards a game, and maybe some of that is understandable, considering that he has had to deal with some uncertainty in his receiving corps because of injuries.

Hoe does any of this affect his ability to exceed the total of 250.5 yards in the NFL Monday night prop? Well, this season two things are rather noticeable – that this is his most accurate year to date, as he’s completed almost 65% of his throws, and he has tossed 17 interceptions, which projects to a total of just under 23 for the year, which would also be a career high.

If you are looking for past history to factor into your analysis of the NFL Monday night prop, you may want to consider that manning has not had a lot of luck against Minnesota. Actually, that’s an understatement.

Last year the Giants faced Minnesota and suffered a 44-7 defeat, and in that game Manning threw for 171 yards, with a 71.1 quarterback rating, which was not his lowest of the year, but was way below his overall figure.

In 2008 the Vikings needed to win to get into the playoffs, and they beat the Giants 20-19. Manning did not play the whole game, completing only 11 of 19 for 119 yards. In 2007 he had disastrous results against the Vikes, hitting 21 of 49 for 273 yards, but also with four interceptions, no less than THREE of which were returned for touchdowns.

Going back even further, Manning appeared allergic to purple in 2005, with a 23-for-48 effort which included four more interceptions.

All told, things have not gone particularly well for Peyton’s little brother against the Vikings. He’s been only 52% accurate, with a pair of touchdown passes and nine interceptions over four games. The cast in Minnesota may have changed over the years, but it’s not like there has been massive upheaval.

I don’t know that the conditions are right to put Manning over the total of 250.5 yards, and also, based on past performance, one of the other NFL Monday night props, which makes it -250 that he will be picked off in this game, could cash in as well.
