NFL Line – Bengals Try to Repeat Success

September 11, 2010

Those who like to challenge themselves against the NFL betting odds know that the Cincinnati Bengals were one of the surprise success stories of 2009, and this year they will find it tougher to repeat that success.

On Sunday, the Bengals will travel up to the Boston area to take on the New England Patriots in NFL action that is slated to begin at 1 PM ET at Gillette Stadium (artificial turf) in Foxborough, MA.

On the NFL line, the Pats are laying 4.5 points, with the total on the contest posted at 44.5 points.

  • New England has won 14 of its last 21 games SU

Cincinnati had a little easier time of it last year, as they had a little lighter schedule, but that doesn’t offer a full explanation as to how the Bengals won the AFC North. For one thing, they won all six games against others from their own division, and that means a season sweep of both the Steelers and Ravens.

They also played very well when getting points; in fact, they were 7-2 as a dog against the NFL line. One thing they were able to do was move the football on the ground behind Cedric Benson, who rambled for 1251 yards, but of course, we’ve got to keep n eye on Benson, who had offered nothing but disappointment prior to that when he was with the Chicago Bears.

Here are some of the head-to-head NFL betting trends with regard to the NFL line:

  • Four of the last six meetings have gone OVER the total
  • New England has won six of the last seven meetings SU
  • Cincinnati has covered four of the last five meetings as the road team
  • New England has won six of the last seven meetings SU as the home team

New England has the New York Jets breathing down their necks in a division that has belonged to them when Tom Brady has been healthy. These players would be lying if they said they weren’t looking for a little redemption after a disastrous loss to the Ravens the last time they stepped on this field on an occasion when it meant something.

But the Pats, who are +130 favorites to win the division in the NFL line, are not coming back to a situation that is exactly perfect; Randy Moss, the explosive wide receiver, is a year older and he wants to get a contract extension. Wes Welker is coming off an ACL injury.

There is still a "committee" in the backfield, and there could be some guys who are injury-prone. Come to think of it, the offensive line is showing some age as well.

Our feeling is that the Bengals, who are getting 4.5 points in this NFL line, may be able to do some things to hang right in there all the way.

They should be able to produce some balance on the ground, with Benson and Bernard Scott. and to say the least, there are a lot of receivers that Carson Palmer can access (Terrell Owens and rookie Jordan Shipley have been added). I don’t think the Bengals will win the AFC North, but I am not ready to write off their chances this early in the season either.

We’ll take the points with Cincinnati in this football betting prediction against the NFL line.
