NFL Game of the Week – Philadelphia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys
January 3, 2010
Playoff Preview – Philadelphia Eagles Go Full Force Against Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys were able to reverse their auspicious “Romo in December” curse going 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in the month of December to bust in to the playoff picture. If Minnesota and Arizona lose, and Dallas wins, the Cowboys can stunningly earn a first-round bye. The problem is that the Eagles are playing for the exact same prize in this game.
Dallas was marred mid-season by the stumbling of Tony Romo and Marion Barber. Romo, who has enjoyed a roller coaster career filled with ups and downs, has somehow found his groove and is playing like the fun loving Romo who simply goes out and wins games. Marion Barber hasn’t crested the 100-yard mark in a while, but he’s scored in his past two games. Against Philadelphia 10th ranked rushing defense on the road (100.4 yards against on the ground), he’ll be struggling to find big yards. Touchdowns, however, aren’t out of the question.

The receiving corps for Dallas hasn’t been very reliable either. Jason Witten has found the endzone just once, and fingers were pointed at Roy Williams who caused a ruckus by complaining about targets midway through a midseason Cowboys win streak. The East Division in the NFC is theirs for the taking, and they can put all their troubles behind them by beating the current division kings. Easier said than done.

Romo in December has been brutal, but he’s even worse in January. As one of the only top tier quarterbacks to have never won in the post season, Romo has experienced a tart turnaround on the road to Super Bowl XLIV. The Cowboys are 4-2 ATS and 5-1 SU in their last 6 home games. A piss poor record against Philadelphia has betting fans cringing though. Dallas is just 1-4 ATS the last five times they’ve hosted Philadelphia. In 9 hostings of the Eagles, Dallas is also just 3-6 SU.
As worried as I am about Romo in the winter, I’m encouraged by Dallas’s promising results when playing at Cowboys Stadium. The thing I don’t like about Philadelphia is that they have a nasty habit of crumbling in big pressure moments during the month of January. Simply put, this team has won big in January just once (during their Super Bowl appearance when Owens was on board) and the hopes have been bubbling up in Philadelphia despite a young roster. The Eagles are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games and 4-1 SU/ATS in their past five roadies.
Injuries have been burning up long term hope for the Eagles, but nothing is more troubling than the loss of their starting center. Everyone knows that the center commands the line and instructs the blocking assignments. With a first-time starter this year hiking the ball to McNabb, the Cowboys will be able to deploy Ware and company effectively to disrupt McNabb and stun the Eagles as they clinch the NFC East.
I know. I can’t believe it either.
Furious Free Pick: Dallas -3 (OVER)
