Andre Johnson +450
If you don’t know now NFL gamblers, let me inform you that Houston’s Andre Johnson is the first wide receiver in NFL history to record two straight seasons of over 1,500 receiving yards. The Texans’ top pass-catching threat caught 101 balls for 1,569 yards in 2009 and is the odds-on-favorite here for good reason – because there isn’t a defensive back in the league that can guard him!
Miles Austin +900
Austin had an absolute breakout season in 2009, ranking third in receiving yards behind Wes Welker and Johnson with 1,320 receiving yards and I suspect he will have another fine season again in 2010. However, the Cowboys added gifted rookie wideout Dez Bryant and veteran possession receiver Roy Williams is expecting to have a better season as well, so Austin could potentially catch less passes for fewer yards than he did in 2009.
Larry Fitzgerald +900
Fitzgerald is banged-up heading into the regular season and will be catching passes from one of two shaky quarterbacks in Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson this coming season. Neither can hold a candle to former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, so expect Fitzgerald’s numbers to go down in 2010 despite not having to share receptions with Anquan Boldin. Fitzgerald ranked 17th in receiving yards last season with 1,092.
Randy Moss +900
Moss finished fifth in receiving yards last season (1,264) and is certainly a legitimate contender with 10 seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards or more in 12 NFL campaigns. I think Moss could be in line for a big season with Wes Welker coming back off a major knee injury and Tom Brady one more season removed from his own ACL surgery.
Reggie Wayne +900
The Colts’ Reggie Wayne tied Moss for fifth in receiving yards last season (1,264) and will undoubtedly have a shot playing alongside of Peyton Manning. Wayne has racked up six consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons with a high of 1,510 back in 2007. The only thing that could derail him from winning the receiving yards title is the fact that Manning generally spreads the ball around evenly.
Analysis: Maybe it’s me, but I’m thinking that Andre Johnson is the clear-cut inner of the receiving yards title for the third consecutive season, mostly because he is the Houston Texans first (and only?) option when quarterback Matt Schaub drops back to pass.
Johnson is big, fast and strong and can beat defensive backs in a multitude of ways and is so much of a favorite here that his odds are half of that of the nearest favorite.
The only other wide receivers on this list that I believe may have a chance of catching Johnson are Randy Moss and possibly Reggie Wayne, but both of those guys probably won’t get nearly as many opportunities to catch the ball as Johnson, simply because they play with a better set of receiving teammates.
In the end, the choice here is crystal-clear. Play the Houston Texans’ Andre Johnson to lead the NFL in receiving yards for the third straight season.
