NFL Futures Betting Picks – Favorites Highlight 2010 NFL Passing Title Odds
September 2, 2010
Six elite signal-callers sit atop the NFL Futures Odds surrounding the 2010 NFL passing yards leader, but the fact of the matter is that this year’s passing title race could literally come down to the final week of the 2010 regular season.
Nevertheless, BetOnline pro football betting buffs will be much better off with their respective NFL Futures Odds wagers centered around the 2010 NFL passing leader, thanks to this informative breakdown on each of the top six 2010 passing title favorites.
With the 2010 NFL preseason coming to a swift end following this weekend’s final contests – and more money to be made in the BetOnline Football Sportsbook – let me get started.
Drew Brees +375
Brees is the passing yards NFL Futures Odds leader despite ranking sixth in passing yards a season ago (4,388) en route to helping the Saints win the first Super Bowl in franchise history. While the Saints’ offense is led by the prolific passing of Brees, I don’t see Brees winning this year’s passing title in large part because of the Saints’ solid rushing attack and overall offensive balance.

Peyton Manning +450
Manning ranked second in the league in passing yards in 2009 (4,500) and is definitely capable of leading the league in passing after pulling off the feat in 2000 and 2003. Indianapolis is a pass-first team that lives and dies with Manning’s success, but I suspect the Colts are going to try and improve their rushing attack just a bit heading into the 2010 regular season – and Manning will fail to lead the NFL in passing yards for the seventh straight season.
Aaron Rodgers +450
Rodgers posted his second consecutive 4,000-yard passing season in 2009 while finishing fourth in the league in passing yards (4,434). I like the blossoming signal-caller’s chances to lead the league in passing yards in 2010 with the Green Bay Packers being legitimate title contenders in the NFC this season. I’d like the see Rodgers with at least one or two more quality receivers, but apparently, he doesn’t need a ‘big name’ wideout to make game-changing plays.
Matt Schaub +500
I’m a bit surprised that Schaub, who led the NFL in passing yards last season (4,770) isn’t one of the top two favorites on this Futures Odds list, but hey NFL gamblers, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth a Schaub is offering even better odds than he likely should be. Schaub has arguably the game’s best wide receiver in Andre Johnson and plays for a pass-happy head coach in Gary Kubiak. No matter what the Futures Odds say, Schaub may be the odds-on-favorite to retain the passing title he won in 2009.
Tom Brady +650
Brady led the league in passing in 2005 and 2007 and finished fifth in passing yards last season (4,398) showing he still has the capability to do great things after sitting out all of the 2008 regular season with a torn ACL. I expect Brady to be even better in 2010 as he will be another season removed from going under the knife – and a lot less worried about whether or not his knee will hold up to the rigors of a full season.
Tony Romo +900
Romo ranked third in passing last season (4,483) and should have an excellent shot to lead the league in passing yards with three talented receivers and one of the best tight ends in the league. Still, I think Romo likely won’t lead the league in passing – in large part because of the team’s powerful rushing attack. Nevertheless, Romo is offering outstanding value as a +900 selection.
Analysis: I know this is going to be a knockdown, drag-out fight to the finish pro football gamblers, but I really believe that one of three players will win this year’s passing title, led by Houston’s Matt Schaub.
I know the Texans signal-caller just completed his first season without missing any contests, but I’m thinking the 29-year-old is going to build on his fine season while possibly leading the Texans to the first playoff appearance in team history.
In addition to Schaub in this race, I also like Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and will admit that he could be an even better selection than Schaub as he has really moved into elite status over the last two seasons and now looks like one of the top five signal-callers in the game. Two straight seasons of passing for more than 4,000 yards tells me Rodgers is undoubtedly ready to take his game – and the Packers – up another notch in 2010.
Last but not least, I think NFL gamblers almost have to take a long, hard look at backing Tom Brady. While the veteran quarterback won’t have his favorite target, Wes Welker, at full strength until possibly mid-season, I think the Pats’ lack of a strong ground game will give Brady more than enough opportunities to put up big yards through the air. For a gut that was coming back off of ACL surgery last season, Brady’s top five finish leads me to believe he could be even better in 2010 as he gets back to looking more like the pre-injury Tom Brady than the slightly nervous one that opened the regular season a year ago.
Prediction: In the end, I’m going with Aaron Rodgers first, followed by Matt Schaub and Tom Brady as my second and third selections.
Expert NFL Pick: Aaron Rodgers
