NFL Futures Betting Odds – Break the Bank With a Winning Wager on 2010 Offensive Roy Odds
August 1, 2010
If history and percentages mean anything, then this year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year will, most likely be a running back as fleet-footed ball-carriers have garnered two of the last five offensive ROY awards while taking bringing home the hardware six times in the last 11 seasons overall.
Of course, last season’s winner, Minnesota Vikings rookie wideout Percy Harvin, became the first wide receiver to win it since former Viking Randy Moss accomplished the feat way back in 1998.

To make matters even more complicated, two of the last four – and three times in the last six seasons – the Offensive ROY winner has been a quarterback, an occurrence that has happened just four times since voting for the award began way back in 1967, wit the first coming in 1970 when Bills quarterback Dennis Shaw (who?) won the award.
Now, NFL betting buffs everywhere can cash in with a winning NFL Futures Odds wager by correctly picking the 2010 award winner months in advance of the actual voting taking place.
To Win Offensive Rookie of the Year
Dez Bryant +500
The Dallas Cowboys drafted the gifted wide receiver with the No. 24 pick in the first round and there is no doubt that Bryant is supremely gifted.
However, the concerns about Bryant’s immaturity and lack of focus may already be starting to surface with the rookie pass catcher saying he’s not carrying any veteran’s shoulder pads despite the fact that every other rookie in league history has had to undergo the same sort of rookie hazing.
The former Oklahoma State star has already cost himself some votes with those that don’t like him, but he’s so talented that he could end up winning anyway.
Ryan Matthews +500
The San Diego Chargers grabbed the elusive running back with the No. 12 overall pick and Matthews possesses the rare combination of size, power and speed that should allow him to succeed immediately.
It also doesn’t hurt that Matthews is going to a team that is expected to be a Super Bowl contender this season and has already handed over the keys to the starting position to him.
Jahvid Best +600
The Detroit Lions nabbed the talented Best with the No. 30 overall pick in the first round and he could start immediately over veteran Kevin Smith as the Lions rebuild with an eye toward the future.
Best missed the final four games of the 2009 season after sustaining a concussion and sore lower back injury against Oregon State, one of two concussions he suffered playing for Cal last season, but there is no denying Bets’s breakaway speed and big play ability.
Many believe he’s reminiscent of tennessee’s Chriis Johnson.
CJ Spiller +800
The Buffalo Bills used the ninth overall pick to grab Spiller in this year’s draft and the former Clemson is extremely versatile with his ability to run, catch the ball out of the backfield and play in the return game, that he will undoubtedly have a shot once he becomes the starter over Fred Jackson.
Sam Bradford +800
The Rams drafted the former Oklahoma star with the No. 1 overall draft pick and there is no denying Bradford’s got a huge gun and a sense of where to throw the ball that is better than a lot of pros.
However, he will be playing for a lowly Rams team that won just once in 2009 and needs to be very cautious before throwing their prized rookie behind and offensive line that isn’t very good right now.
I think Bradford sits early on, particularly if he misses a significant amount of training camp.
Dexter McCluster +1000
Not many people know about McCluster, a former star running back at Mississippi who was the No. 36 overall pick by the rebuilding Kansas City Chiefs.
While McCluster stands just 5-9, his jaw-dropping quickness and escapability make him a terror in the open field.
McCluster is also a multi-talented back that can be effective as a runner or receiver and should be a huge part of Todd Haley’s game plan in 2010.
Analysis: I’m going to get right to the point with my selection by saying that I genuinely believe this year’s winner will come from one of the trio of first round running backs taken in this year’s draft (although I really like McCluster).
I suspect that C.J. Spiller and Jahvid Best will both likely struggle a bit to find their respective way with each playing for rebuilding teams that don’t have the most intimiadting ffensive lines in the league.
I really like the situation that Ryan Matthews has walked into with the San Diego Chargers as he immediately inherits the franchise-back labe for a team that has had plenty of success over the last near-decade, despite its numerous postseason failures.
Matthews will play in a well-balanced offense that features a legitimate all-pro quarterback in Philip Rivers and in which he could see more carries because of the loss of wide receiver Vincent Jackson.
At 6-feet-tall and 218 pounds, Matthews is plenty big, but the former Fresno State star also possesses deceptive 4.5, 40-yard dash speed and has enough elusivenes to make any tackler miss.
After languishing near the bottom of the league in rushing in each of the last two seasons, the Chargers’ running game should be back in a big way with Mathews going on to win the 2010 Offensive ROY award as the team’s feature back.
