NFL Futures – Dez Bryant Bringing Some Much Needed Moxy To Cowboys
August 1, 2010
Roy Williams is making a big fuss about rookie Dez Bryant not carrying his shoulder pads at practice as part of some sort of hazing tradition for NFL new comers. The laughable part about this is that Williams couldn’t even carry Bryant’s jock on the field. Williams should have just kept his mouth shut, instead of trying to embarrass one of the leading favorites to win Offensive Rookie of the Year in NFL futures betting.
There’s a reason that the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones decided to move up in the draft to take Bryant 24th overall, and that reason is because Roy Williams is a joke at receiver. In fact, Bryant was drafted to replace Roy Williams in the starting rotation.

In seven years as an NFL pro, Williams has only become a go-to player once in his career. Drafted 7th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft, Williams had his best season in 2006 when he caught 82 passes for 1,310 yards and 7 touchdowns.
In a 25 games with the Dallas Cowboys since being traded for to replace the forthcoming void of Terrell Owens, Williams has caught just 57 catches for 794 yards and 8 touchdowns. Those aren’t exactly the numbers you want out of a starting receiver.
That’s why Bryant is tied with Ryan Matthews of the Chargers at +500 to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year race in 2010, which you can bet on here!
Miles Austin is undeniably the leading receiver of the Dallas Cowboys after a breakout season. Along with Jason Witten, Austin led the Cowboys with 81 receptions for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. His combination of speed, hands and the chemistry he shared with quarterback Tony Romo makes him a great deep field threat for America’s Team.
Dez Bryant was the top-ranked receiver in the NFL draft, and was the second receiver taken behind Demaryius Thomas, who was selected two picks prior by the Denver Broncos. At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Bryant is the ideal build for a flank receiver on short and mid-range routes.
More importantly, Bryant’s refusal to carry Williams’ pads are less of a sign that he is disrespectful and more so an indication that they guy is wired like a hard nosed competitor. If Witten had asked Bryant to carry his pads, I have no doubt that he would’ve picked them up and spit-shined them personally.
What Dallas has lacked on the field is a gritty personality. It starts with Wade Phillips, who comes off as a player-friendly coach but it is permeated by Romo, who is often far too relaxed on and off the field. Without Marion Barber running at full bore thanks to a quad injury that lingered the entire season, the Cowboys seemed soft. It’s part of the reason they went just 9-7 ATS against the oddsmakers despite an 11-5 SU record.
Barber is the lynchpin in the Cowboys offense, and many are ready to write him off after a horrific season last year. Barber has never crested the 1,000 rushing yard plateau but still managed 7 touchdowns despite being slowed by the quad injury in 2009. Steven Jackson of the Rams had the exact same injury and went from 1,042 rushing yards in 2008 to 1,416 yards in 2009. I’d expect the grizzled Barber to return to his rock pounding form in the 2010 NFL betting season.
When you are as relaxed as Tony Romo is at quarterback, you need to be surrounded by hyper competitive athletes that will play with their foot on the pedal throughout the season. Barber is wired like that. So is Dez Bryant.
Sorry, Roy Williams. But instead of complaining that a rookie won’t carry your pads at training camp, why don’t you do everyone, including Bryant, a favor and shut your freakin’ trap. Bryant will not only take your starting spot before the onset of the season, he’ll be making you an afterthought on the sidelines.
It’s obvious that I am a fan of Bryant, and the F-U he just gave Williams makes me want to jump on his bandwagon all the more. The Dallas defense is a strong one, and with Bryant running routes opposite Miles, it makes the Cowboys a promising NFC Championship bet.
