NFL Futures – Colts, Patriots Lead Undefeated Specials in 2010

September 3, 2010

Are you brazen enough to take a flier in the riskiest NFL Future of them all? High risk means huge reward, and they don’t get more ridiculous than betting on a team to go 16-0 SU in the regular season. That’s right – you can bet on which team will go undefeated and you won’t be surprised at who’s leading the pack.

Before we break down the top bets to go undefeated in the 2010 NFL betting season, let’s get two teams out of the way. Both Baltimore and Dallas are slated at +4000 to go undefeated, and there’s no way I can encourage a bet on either team. Not even a flier. Tony Romo will cost the Cowboys at least one game (if not more) and I don’t trust Baltimore’s defense this season with Ed Reed already battling injuries and Ray Lewis taking another step back.

Now that that’s taken care of, here are the rest of the best.

Indianapolis Colts (+3000 to go undefeated)
Last season, Indianapolis went 14-0 SU before clashing with the New York Jets in Week 16. Trailing at half time, head coach Jim Caldwell benched his starters and the Colts ended up losing that game and then sat their starters again in Week 17 with a 30-7 loss to Buffalo. They would finish 14-2 SU.

The rub here is that anyone who watched that game against the Jets remembers seeing Peyton Manning seething on the sidelines. He wanted that undefeated season on his resume, and this year the Colts are reportedly looking better than ever. The playoffs are a totally different story, but if the Colts can get past the Patriots in Week 11 in Foxboro, then this is the most feasible bet in the NFL futures.

New Orleans Saints (+3000 to go undefeated)
Another team which went 14-0 before an unexpected romp by the Cowboys took them by surprise. The defending champion Saints actually have one of the easier schedules in the league. Their biggest challenge comes in Week 1 when they face Favre and the Vikings without Sidney Rice and potentially Percy Harvin. After that the schedule is markedly easier, but a Week 8 matchup against Pittsburgh and visits to Dallas, Baltimore, Atlanta and Cincinnati late in the season could kill those undefeated hopes.

San Diego Chargers (+3000 to go undefeated)
I still have zero idea why the oddsmakers are so high on this team. I was astounded when someone took Ryan Matthews in the first round of my fantasy draft last week. No Vincent Jackson? No dice. This team will be lucky to win their division, let alone go undefeated.

Green Bay Packers (+5000 to go undefeated)
Say what you will about the Packers, but this is one of the best regular season bets in the entire league. Last year they went 11-5 SU and 11-4-1 ATS. Obviously, their biggest tests this season will come in their two games against the Vikings. They also face a huge test against the New England Patriots in Week 15 which could end up deciding the playoff spot for both teams. Road games against the Jets, Vikings, Falcons and Patriots make me nervous for this one.

New England Patriots (+5000 to go undefeated)
The last team to go undefeated in an NFL season was the Patriots, and there’s every reason to believe they could do it again in 2010. Tom Brady has lost the knee brace that was protecting his injured knee and has looked sharp in the NFL preseason with Randy Moss. While Welker’s injury is a bit of a scare, that’s probably the only reason that they’re not getting the same odds as the Colts to go undefeated.

That said, the Patriots open the season against Cincinnati and the New York Jets. They also have home games against Minnesota, Green Bay and Indianapolis this season. Betting on the Patriots to go undefeated in 2010 really depends on how vindictive you think Brady can be, but for my money, only the Patriots and Colts deserve a flier bet in this daunting NFL future.
