NFL Football Betting – Game Match-Up 12/21/08
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Tennessee Titans 1:00 PM ET
Defense will be the name of the game this Sunday in a pivotal sports betting match-up that will decide home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs when the Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3 SU, 8-6 ATS) travel to Nashville to face the Tennessee Titans (12-2 SU, 11-2-1 ATS). Pittsburgh is fresh off of yet another come from behind effort, a 13-9 NFL betting win at rival Baltimore that saw them win as road dogs per the closing NFL wagering odds. The Titans, however, are licking their wounds after a tough 13-12 defeat to the Texans; just their third loss against the pro football gambling line this season.
Pittsburgh comes into this game red-hot, covering its last four games ATS and winning five in a row outright since losing to the Colts six weeks ago. Against the Ravens last week, the Steelers sputtered at times but a last-minute 92-yard touchdown drive was good enough to get past the hated Ravens. In the effort, Steelers bettors saw QB Ben Roethlisberger complete 22 of 40 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target, WR Hines Ward, also had a big day for Pittsburgh catching eight balls for 197 yards despite playing with a bounty on his head.
Pittsburgh’s #1 overall defense also had a big day, holding the Ravens to just 202 total yards and forcing two turnovers to remain the NFL’s top defense in most statistical categories. The Steelers defense has also led to their last two games going under the ‘total’ for sports gamblers that bet on NFL totals.
Against the Texans last week, Titans bettor’s worst fears were realized as the Houston defense was able to keep the Tennessee ground game in check, forcing journeyman QB Kerry Collins to beat them with his arm. Not surprisingly, Collins struggled, completing just 15 of 33 passes for 181 yards while throwing an interception and no touchdowns on the day.
Making matters worse was the loss of superstar DT Albert Haynesworth with a minute to go in the game. The extent of Haynesworth’s injury is unclear, but he is expected to miss the final two games of the regular season, a huge blow to the Titans. Tennessee did get good news on Tuesday though, with NFL gamblers watching as six Titans were selected to play in the Pro Bowl.
NFL betting trends to know before placing a wager on this game include: Tennessee is 13-4 ATS in its last 17 games as an underdog, 10 of the Steelers last 13 games against AFC opponents have resulted in games going over the ‘total’, and the Steelers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games against the Titans.
Current NFL wagering lines have the Steelers installed as a short two-point road favorites in this battle of AFC titans and have set the game ‘total’ at 35 points.
