NFL Betting – Which 0-3 Teams to Bet On
October 2, 2010
After three weeks, the NFL still has five winless teams. The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers are all looking for their first win of the season.
It’s not surprising the Bills and the Panthers are looking for their first win but the other three teams should have had a win by now. The 49ers are especially surprising after most NFL Odds makers tabbed San Francisco as the runaway favorites to win the NFC West.

The Browns and the Lions came into the season with a renewed optimism after the Browns made executive changes and the Lions made on field personnel changes to improve their teams. Neither has lived up to their dark horse status.
Let’s have a look at which team will be the first and which will be the last team to break into the win column.
Buffalo Bills – Upcoming games – Jets, Jaguars, @Ravens, @Chiefs, Bears, Lions
The Bills are 1-2 against the spread. Despite a strong showing versus the Patriots, I don’t see them covering the 5½ points against the Jets.
Based solely on their upcoming games the Bills have a legitimate chance to beat the Jaguars and beyond that, they take on fellow 0-3 team Detroit in week 10. If both are winless, one streak will end in week 10. I’m making the bold prediction that the Bills end their losing against the Jaguars in week 5.
Cleveland Browns – Upcoming games – Bengals, Falcons, @Steelers, @Saints, Patriots, Jets, @Jacksonville, Carolina
The Browns have the toughest schedule of the remaining winless teams. They are 1-2 ATS after keeping it close against the Ravens. They could conceivably upset the Bengals but if they lose to Cincy, they will at least 7-point NFL Betting underdogs in their next six games until they host Carolina in week 11.
Detroit Lions – Upcoming games – @Packers, Rams, @Giants, Redskins, Jets, @Bills
I was one of those pundits that expected a marked improvement from the Lions. We couldn’t foresee the Lions losing Matt Stafford in game one but even with Shaun Hill under center, the Lions are playing hard. The team is 2-1 ATS. They will lose big to the Packers this week but they have a very winnable game against the Rams at Ford Field. If they lose to the Rams, they could surprise the defensively challenged Giants in week 6.
The Detroit Lines will end their winless streak next week with a victory over the Rams.
Carolina Panthers – Upcoming games – @Saints, Bears, 49ers, @Rams, Saints, @Buccaneers
The Panthers are 0-3 against the spread and I don’t see it getting much better until late in the season. John Fox is out of Carolina at the end of the season, his head isn’t in the game and I don’t see the players playing hard for their coach. Matt Moore has been worse than the man he replaced, Jake Delhomme. Rookie Jimmy Clausen isn’t ready for prime time. I will continue to fade the Carolina Panthers on the NFL betting lines all season. Looking at their schedule, they don’t have a winnable game until they play the 49ers but even that looks like a tough victory. A win over Tampa is a possibility but the Panthers are likely to be the last winless team this season.
San Francisco 49ers – Upcoming games – @Falcons, Eagles, Raiders, @Panthers
Mike Singletary’s head looks like it’s ready to explode. His team took the Saints down to the wire in week two but against the Seahawks and the Chiefs, the 49ers looked lost on the field. The 49ers are 1-2 ATS.
Alex Smith has taken a major step backwards and his turnovers are hurting the 49ers. Frank Gore is playing great and as long as the 49ers haven’t quit on Singletary, they should play well against the Falcons and the Eagles but they will need to wait until the Raiders come to town in week 6 before they chalk up their first win.
I don’t see any of these teams ending their losing this week but by week five, the Bills and the Lions will break through.
The 49ers will be the next winless team to earn a victory in week 6.
The Browns and the Panthers will be the last two teams to earn a win this season and when the betting odds come out, I’d throw my money down on the Panthers being the last winless team in the NFL.
