NFL Betting Trends – Dogs Bark Loud in Week 2

September 22, 2010

The big news in NFL betting trends from Week 2 of the season is that the dogs were barking pretty loud.

Underdogs, that is, as a lot of teams pulled surprises, several of which were over playoff teams from last season.

Also, NFL totals reversed themselves a bit, although not enough to substantially change the direction of over-unders in the NFL betting trends.

All told, underdogs rang up a 10-6 ATS record last week, and as an added kicker, six of those underdogs won their games straight-up, five of them on the road. Perhaps the most surprising of these instances involved the Chicago Bears, who were a seven-point underdog in NFL betting, yet defeated the Dallas Cowboys by seven points (27-20).

There were three home underdogs who covered, and two of those – the Cincinnati Bengals, who were getting three points against Baltimore, and the New York Jets, getting a field goal from the New England Patriots – won their games straight-up. Underdogs have now taken the lead in NFL betting trends, posting a 17-14-1 ATS mark.

Home favorites covered five times and brought their total up to ten ATS wins on the year. Home dogs had four wins to bring their total up to nine; road dogs covered eight games, which brings their total to ten, and road favorites have now covered four times, after the Houston Texans’ 30-27 overtime win over the Washington Redskins.

In Week 1, home teams won 12 of the 16 games straight-up. In Week 2, the home and road teams both had eight straight-up wins, which makes home teams the cumulative leader at 20-12 SU. The home teams had a 9-7 ATS advantage, which gives them the edge in NFL betting at 19-12-1 ATS.

The picture with totals is a bit different. In Week 1, there were a load of unders – twelve of them in all – and you just knew that NFL betting trend was not going to hold up. In Week 2 there were nine overs and seven games that went under the total. So while the "under" still has the edge at 19-13, this might be an NFL betting trend we can expect to even out a bit.

The lowest total of the week was 37.5 points, and it was posted on three games: the Bucs-Panthers, Steelers-Titans and Raiders-Rams. All three of them went under the total. The high total was 47.5 in the Colts-Giants game, and that went over the number with 52 points.

Next in line was 45.5 in the game between the San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars, and that went over, as did the three games that were at 43.5 points – the Texans-Redskins, Falcons-Cardinals and Niners-Saints. So maybe there is an NFL betting trend we can follow there. Many people already feel you should go "over" on the highest totals, and "under" on the lowest. This week’s action bore that out.

In support of further NFL betting trend information, in 32 games played in this NFL season, the average number of points scored is 39. That comes after an average of 41.4 points this past week. The average total posted in NFL betting odds in the first week was 41.9, with 41.8 in Week 2.

There have been seven games each week played on artificial turf, and no definitive NFL betting trend to derive just yet. . In Week 1 there were two overs and five unders on turf, while Week 2 produced a complete reversal of that, bringing that total to seven unders and seven overs. so stay tuned.

An AFC team played an NFC team only twice in Week 1. In Week 2 there were six inter-conference games, with the AFC covering four of them and taking the 5-3 ATS advantage in NFL betting to date.

Five playoff teams from last season suffered straight-up defeats – Dallas, Baltimore, Arizona, Minnesota and New England. Who will go down to defeat this week, and what will it mean in the NFL trends?
