NFL Betting Online Fave Green Bay Looks to Start Super Bowl March with a Victory

September 12, 2010

The -3 road NFL betting online favored Green Bay Packers are hoping that a victory against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday will be the first step towards a Super Bowl season.

The Packers have become the en vogue team for NFL fans and some football handicappers out of the NFC Conference to make this year’s Super Bowl. With the rival Minnesota Vikings having all sorts of issues on the offensive side of the ball, and the Dallas Cowboys having problems with their offensive line, the Packers are the team that everybody’s turning to from the NFC.

Hey, they’re good, no doubt, but beating Philadelphia on the road, much less covering the spread, might not be as easy of an NFL betting prediction as some might think.

The trends back-up the NFL betting online odds in this game.

  • The Green Bay Packers are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games.
  • The Green Bay Packers are 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 games on the road.
  • The Green Bay Packers are 9 and 3 ATS in their last 12 games in September.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles are 5 and 2 ATS in their last 7 games in September.

The Packers’ offense is flat out awesome. Green Bay has scored 20 points or more in their last 9 regular season/playoff games. That’s a pretty cool streak, and the offense is supposed to be better in 2010 than it was in 2009.

QB Aaron Rodgers is one of the best in the NFL, RB Ryan Grant is solid, and the wide receivers are very good. The Green Bay Packers will put up points in this game, but it’s going to take more than offense to beat Philadelphia on the road. It’s going to take Green Bay to play excellent defense.

I’m not sure if this defensive unit is anywhere close to being great. They’re good, but definitely not great. The Packers led the NFL in creating turnovers in 2009. After looking at their schedule, where they got to play Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Detroit twice, St. Louis and Seattle in the same season, it’s obvious why the Packers’ D caused all of those turnovers.

They played against bad teams. The 2010 Philadelphia Eagles, no matter what they looked like during the NFL Preseason, is not a bad team. On defense, the Eagles have two corners, Asante Samuel and Ellis Hobbs, that can guard Green Bay’s wide receivers one-on-one. The offensive line isn’t great, but it’s not bad either and Philly’s D-coordinator, Sean McDermott, should be better at calling those intricate blitz plays.

The Eagles did appear to struggle on offense during the preseason, but that’s head coach Andy Reid’s department and Reid is one of the craftiest play-callers in the NFL. He was saving his best for the regular season, obviously. Although QB Kevin Kolb hasn’t looked that great, the truth is that he faces a less than stellar Green Bay pass defense.

The 2009 overall rankings give the impression that the NFL betting online experts are right, that Green Bay’s defense should shut down the Eagles, but I don’t see it that way. To me, Green Bay just isn’t that good at stopping the pass and those rankings came about because they got to play cream puffs last season. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisgberger torched them for 503 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. Arizona’s Kurt Warner passed for 379 yards and 5 touchdowns in that crazy wildcard playoff game.

Kolb isn’t going to have to do nearly that well for the Eagles to pull off the upset this Sunday. All he has to do is not turn the ball over and go through his progressions. Yeah, that’s right. I’m calling the upset. I believe that the best NFL betting online wager to make in this game is on Philadelphia on the moneyline.
