NFL Betting Online – Jets Welcome Ryan’s Former Team For Season Opener

September 11, 2010

After several years as the team’s defensive coordinator, New York Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan was passed over as a coaching candidate for the Baltimore Ravens, as the franchise chose to give the job to John Harbaugh instead. The Ravens have hardly regretted the decision, as Harbaugh has delivered consecutive postseason appearances, including an AFC Championship game appearance in his first year with the team.

Ryan would move on to become the leader of the Jets, and enjoyed success of his own in his initial year with the club, winning nine games to make the postseason as a Wild Card team, and driving all the way to the AFC Championship where New York fell to the Indianapolis Colts. Both the Ravens and the Jets are considered favorites to represent their conference in the Super Bowl this season. That road begins Monday at New Meadowlands Stadium, when New York hosts Baltimore.

NFL Betting Online: What The Ravens Will Have To Do To Win

For the first time since Ray Lewis and Ed Reed combined forces to make the Ravens defense one of the most elite this league has ever seen, it appears as though the offense is finally catching up. Baltimore added a pair of playmaking receivers in Anquan Boldin and TJ Houshmandzadeh in the offseason. Combine them with veteran Derick Mason and tight end Todd Heap, and third-year quarterback Joe Flacco has all the tools needed to continue his development as a franchise quarterback. The Ravens have injuries in the secondary that will hinder their play unless the pass rush can excel and mask those deficiencies, which may be a tall task against one of the better offensive lines in the league.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez will have to find a way to avoid the sophomore slump that has plagued many NFL starters over the past few years, and his continues growth will be key to how far the Jets go this season. New York replaced Thomas Jones with LaDainian Tomlinson to compliment Shonne Greene, and Tomlinson must provide the spark that Jones did off the bench to open things up for Sanchez, particularly in the play-action. Cornerback Darrelle Revis finally ended his holdout and joined the team last week, and should be put on an island against Anquan Boldin. Whether or not Revis is in game shape will play a big role in how the Jets’ defense operates.

NFL Betting Online: Outlook & Pick

The Ravens will enter hostile ground this Monday night, and will be playing against a determined team looking to score their leader a measure of revenge after he was bypassed by Baltimore for the head coaching job. There may not be a better team in the league capable of remaining calm under pressure and dealing with the atmosphere than Harbaugh, Flacco, and the Ravens however, and Baltimore should get the job done.

NFL Betting Online Pick: Ravens + 2.5
