NFL Betting Odds – Who Should You Take in the AFC East?

August 4, 2010

With just a few short weeks until kickoff of the season, it’s never too early to take a look at the NFL betting odds.

Today, we’ll preview the AFC East:

New England Patriots (+130): Despite winning the AFC East just a season ago, many NFL fans expect this to be the year that the New England Patriots dynasty officially crumbles. The team has injury concerns, contract concerns, and comes into 2010 with as much uncertainty as any time this decade.

Clearly things start with quarterback Tom Brady, who-with training camp set to get underway Thursday- is still ironing out the details of a long-term contract. While that will probably become official sometime in the next few days, there are concerns about the quarterback, who just didn’t look like himself in 2009, after missing the entire previous season with a torn ACL. To make matters worse, wide receiver Wes Welker too is coming off a knee injury, and while he will play in 2010, no one knows quite how effective he’ll be.

On defense, the Patriots will be young, but have plenty of talent. Linebacker Jerod Mayo returns as last year’s leading tackler, while Vincent Wilfork will anchor the defensive line. Young defensive back Darius Butler will likely get a starting nod, with depth being provided by draft picks Brandon Spikes (LB), Devin McCourty (CB) and Jermaine Cunningham (DE).

For the first time in a long time, there seem to be questions heading into this season for the New England Patriots. Luckily, head coach Bill Belichick, Brady and others always seem to find the answers.

New York Jets (+140): Of every team in the NFL Betting odds, the J-E-T-S seem to be amongst the favorites of gamblers.

Fans in New York have every reason to be excited, as this team added several key parts in the off-season to an already explosive team. LaDainian Tomlinson comes to New York from San Diego, while Santonio Holmes joins New York after catching 79 balls for 1,248 yards last year. Defensively, cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie and rookie Kyle Wilson will join what is already one of the most exciting units in the league.

To win this division though, things come down to second year quarterback Mark Sanchez. Can he improve on his 53 percent passing, and 12 TD to 20 INT rookie performance?

If he can, the Jets may be dancing their way to a division crown in the East. Make them your bet today!

Miami Dolphins (+325): For all the talk about the Jets off-season moves, it was the Dolphins who made the biggest splash, acquiring superstar receiver Brandon Marshall from Denver. Marshall is coming off a 101 catch season that saw him tied for third in the league in that category.

Under center in Miami will be Chad Henne, who got his first extended time as a starter last year, throwing for 2,878 yards and 12 touchdowns. Ricky Williams returns in the backfield after a monstrous 1,100 yard season, but will be likely to share some of those carries with Ronnie Brown, who comes back from injury this year.

Buffalo Bills (+2500): Looking at the NFL Betting Odds, there really isn’t a whole lot of reason to get excited for the Bills this season. Or is there?

Yes, questions remain at quarterback and on defense, but quietly, the Bills have put together a strong group of skill position players. Rookie C.J. Spiller will join Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson in the backfield, the latter of which was a 1,000 yard rusher a year ago. At wide receiver, Lee Evans had a disappointing 2009 season, but should be helped by the new No. 81 in town, rookie Marcus Easley.

It’ll be a long shot for the Buffalo Bills to win this division, but at the price you’re getting them at, they may be the best bet in the NFL betting odds.
