NFL Betting Odds – Jaguars vs Chargers

September 19, 2010

Apparently, when it comes to this weekend’s NFL betting, most people don’t seem to have much faith in the Jacksonville Jaguars after they won their opener against Denver next week. They’ll fly across country to prove their doubters wrong, when they take on Chargers Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at San Diego Chargers (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Sunday, September 20: 4:15 p.m. CBS- Live from Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA

NFL Betting Odds:

Jacksonville: +8
San Diego: -8
Total Points: 45 ½

Heading into the second weekend of play, few teams have a smaller margin for error than the San Diego Chargers. This team is notorious for their slow starts, but have no excuse after Monday night’s embarrassing loss at Kansas City.

In the game, the Chargers scored just 14 points, despite outgaining the Chiefs by almost a 2-1 margin. In the game, quarterback Philip Rivers was his usual self, as he threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns, with most NFL wagering fans not even aware he was missing his top wide receiver, Vincent Jackson. Still, when push came to shove, the Chargers couldn’t get points when they needed them, as they fell by one touchdown.

If San Diego is to get their first win of the season, it’ll have to come over a pesky Jaguars team. Picked to finish at the bottom of the AFC South (and AFC in general), they came out with a nice win to open the season.

In their game against Denver, Jacksonville won, despite being outgained by the Broncos 363 yards to 299. While Maurice Jones-Drew gets all the credit, it was actually quarterback David Garrard who was the star of the show. He completed 16 of 21 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns, in leading his team to victory. Tight end Marcedes Lewis had two of those touchdown grabs.

Heading into this weekend’s NFL betting, it’s easy to make the case for both teams getting this win. In the end though, we’ll take the Chargers.

We know that 8 ½ points is a lot to be giving for this team, but at the same time they ran into a worst case scenario in their loss Monday night. They went to a divisional rival, in a night game to open the season, in weather conditions that favored the other team. Back in sunny San Diego there is no way they’ll have to deal with the sloppy conditions they saw in Kansas City.

As for Jacksonville, they enter this one looking to prove their Week 1 win was a fluke, but until they prove it we’re stay away in the NFL betting. Last weekend, they got a Denver team flying across two time zones, that isn’t all that good to begin with. It’ll be a totally different ball game when they take on San Diego Sunday.

When breaking down the NFL betting, there are a lot of great picks heading into the weekend, but only one that can’t miss. Take the Chargers giving 8 ½ points at home in your pick.

The Pick: San Diego -8 ½
