NFL Betting Matchup Steelers @ Titans
December 19, 2008
The Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3 SU, 8-6 ATS, 7-7 O/U) have won five consecutive games in the BetOnline Sportsbook while covering the spread in four straight for NFL sports betting backers.
The Tennessee Titans (12-2 SU, 11-3 ATS, 7-7O/U) have dropped two of their last four games overall after winning their first 10 games of the season and will be looking to get back in the win column following a surprising loss in Week 15.
The Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens 13-9 to narrowly cover the spread for sports betting backers as a 3-point road favorite last week.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed 22 of 40 passes for 246 yards with one touchdown, hooking up with veteran wide receiver Hines Ward eight times for 107 yards in the win.
"This is like our biggest win. I know we won the Super Bowl, but you just can’t understand the feeling of the players in this locker room right now,” running back Willie Parker said.
The Steelers scored 10 fourth quarter points after getting man-handled for the better part of the first three quarters. Pittsburgh won on a controversial call as Roethlisberger connected with wide receiver Santonio Holmes for the game-winning touchdown with just 43 seconds remaining.
"We make the plays when they count," Holmes said. "It doesn’t matter how the game goes through the course of three quarters. It always comes down to playing four quarters of football."
The Titans looked underwhelming in losing to the Houston Texans 13-12 while failing to cover the spread as a 3-point road favorite last week.
Veteran quarterback Kerry Collins completed 15 of 33 passes for 181 yards with one interception for Tennessee while running back Chris Johnson rushed for 65 yards on 13 carries.
"Hopefully we’ll be up for the challenge and guys will come back from vacation," linebacker Keith Bulluck said. "I think we were on vacation this week, knowing we got a bye and whatever other good stuff happened for us last week. But I know as a team we need to get our heads out of our (expletive) and come out and play football. Pittsburgh is playing for way more than us next week."
The Titans couldn’t stop quarterback Matt Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson who hooked up 11 times for 207 yards and one touchdown.
"Andre was special today," Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said. "The reason he’s special is because I can move him all over the place and it doesn’t bother him."

Analysis: While the Titans have definitely shown some chinks in their armor recently and the Steelers are on a red-hot roll, I think Tennessee will bring its collective ‘A’ game against Pittsburgh while winning at home in an absolute thriller.
I like the Titans to win and cover the spread as a ‘Pick ‘em.
