NFL Betting Lines – Week 2 Best Bets
September 15, 2010
For those of us who bet on the NFL, now that Week 1 is in the bag, we finally know a lot more about this season’s NFL betting scene.
A lot of teams are exactly as good as we thought they were, and some other upset specialists are as deadly as we feared. Here’s a quick glimpse at the four best Week 2 lines worth tracking:

(HOME TEAM in caps, lines subject to change)
Pittsburgh Steelers (+5.5) over TENNESSEE TITANS
This is definitely one of the tougher games on the board. The Tennessee Titans put a stiff hurt on the Oakland Raiders, but will have a substantially bigger test against a Pittsburgh defense that embarrassed the Falcons, giving up just 58-yards of rushing against Atlanta.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Chris Johnson will raise hell at home against the Steelers, but keep your excitement steady. Rashard Mendenhall is looking like a savvy crutch in NFL betting, and I’m more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt against Tennessee, which gave up 5.4 yards per carry and 135 total yards rushing against McFadden and Jason Campbell.
Imagine what a truck like Mendenhall, and a slasher like Dixon, can do?
A tip about this line: everyone will bet on the Titans. If you like the Steelers with the points wait for the line to move against Pittsburgh. It could shift to +6.5 and the higher this line is the better the value.
DALLAS COWBOYS (-8.5) over Chicago Bears
The Cowboys had one of those “oh my god everything is going wrong” games against the Redskins in Week 1. Good news is that the Bears are pitiful, especially on goal-line rush defense where they gave up two short yard touchdowns in Week 1.
Think Marion Barber is licking his lips?
The Bears had mountains of trouble keeping the Lions from rallying with a number two quarterback at the helm. Home coming for Dallas is going to be a gong show.
Dallas is far from a contender from the looks of things, but Chicago looks pathetic. Grab this line early. Nobody’s going to bet on the Bears this weekend if they have their heads screwed on straight.
Miami Dolphins (+5.5) over MINNESOTA VIKINGS
The smartest thing said about Brett Favre and the Vikings last week is that they had two gimme matchups to start the 2009 NFL betting season. That gave Favre time to gel with the team and vice versa.
If anything was apparent against New Orleans, it’s that they’re still getting used to each other and, while it’s easy to question the Dolphins in Buffalo, I’m too scared of their offense going bananas and keeping a game close against a shaky Vikings team.
Houston Texans (-3.0) over WASHINGTON REDSKINS
The Redskins looked awful against the Cowboys and were lucky that Tashard Choice fumbled at the end of the first quarter. Then they were also lucky that the offensive line coughed up a holding penalty to nullify what would have been a game winning touchdown.
They won’t be so lucky when Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and Arian Foster are lighting up the scoreboard.
Houston won’t take the pressure off the offense no matter how well Donovan McNabb adjusts to his new uniform. That’s a dangerous factor to remember when you bet on football this week.
Sure, Washington won its first game, but Houston is dialed in and running on tons of momentum heading to Washington. I’d jump on this line now before the NFL betting public weighs on and skews the odds against Houston.
