The Eagles opened their season against the Green Bay Packers, and in the first half starting quarterback Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion, and had to leave the game. Michael Vick replaced Kolb for the second half and had his best game since returning from suspension. The Eagles lost 27-20 but Vick led the team back and gave Philadelphia Eagles a chance to win.
It looks like Vick’s time away from the game gave him some perspective on his style of play, as it was just one game but Vick was making short accurate passes, something he couldn’t do before the suspension. He can still air the ball out on a long pass and beat teams with his legs, but for once, he looked comfortable in the pocket. In the NFL, if a quarterback can’t play in the pocket, he won’t win the big games.
Kevin Kolb is a possibility for Sunday’s game but after seeing Vick’s play, they will give Kolb all the time he needs to recover.
The Detroit Lions lost their game against the Chicago Bears after controversial but technically correct call at the end of the game that negated a Calvin Johnson touchdown pass.
Earlier in the game, starting quarterback Matt Stafford was knocked out of the game with a separated throwing shoulder on a blindside hit from Julius Peppers. Shaun Hill replaced him in the game and he will be the starter for the Lions in week 2. Hill made 16 starts for the 49ers between 2007 and 2009.
The Lions defense is much improved over last season with veteran defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and rookie tackle Ndamukong Suh joining the squad. The Lions additions will do enough to keep Vick in the pocket, but as we saw in Week 1, Michael Vick can now beat teams as a pocket passer.
NFL Betting Predictions: Philadelphia Eagles -6
