To Win Offensive Rookie Of The Year

  • Ben Tate +600
  • CJ Spiller +800
  • Dez Bryant +500
  • Jahvid Best +600
  • Ryan Matthews +500
  • Sam Bradford +800

Here are my rankings for the best offensive rookie this 2010-11 NFL betting season out of the top contenders for the award:

6. Sam Bradford – St. Louis Rams

It’s difficult for a quarterback to step into a starting role and perform well enough to win the Rookie of The Year Award. Only three times since 1970 has a quarterback done so.

The adjustment from college to professional offenses for a quarterback is a steep learning curve.

Even four-time MVP quarterback Peyton Manning led the league in interceptions when he was rookie with an astounding 28.

Aside from learning a pro system and how to read defensive schemes unlike anything he has ever seen before, Bradford doesn’t have much to play with.

Running back Stephen Jackson will take much of the pounding in what will be another losing season for the Rams.

I don’t see Bradford getting any more than 10-12 touchdown receptions from his collection of poor-to-mediocre receiving options.

5. Ben Tate – Houston Texans

Tate will have some competition in Houston with Steve “the fumbler” Slaton and Ryan Moats competing for carries. Tate is a strong runner and given the opportunity, he should be able to showcase his 4.4, 40 speed and explosiveness.

The question is how many opportunities will he get in his rookie season with a crowded backfield and a pass-all-the-time offensive scheme?

Unfortunately for Tate, it looks like he may get utilized in a similar fashion that Reggie Bush was in his first season with New Orleans. Expect about 10-15 carries a game if he’s lucky, certainly not enough chances to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

4. C.J. Spiller – Buffalo Bills

I think C.J. is the most talented back in this draft class. He was a state champion in the 100 and 200 meter, and he was crazy good as a Clemson Tiger, averaging 5.9 yards per carry during his 4-year college career.

There are two problems for Spiller; one is that the Bills offensive line is garbage and secondly, he will be competing against two quality running backs in Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson for the starting job.

I don’t like this situation.

3. Dez Bryant – Dallas Cowboys

There is so much hype surrounding this guy. Yes, Bryant has the best chance of any rookie wide receiver to put up great numbers right away. The Cowboys possess an offensive system that is one of the most balanced and productive in the NFL.

Bryant should thrive in the system as a potential deep threat for the Cowboys. He’s a big target at 6’ 2” and 225 pounds but I do question his speed and quickness against NFL corners.

Some character issues have been cited as well and I don’t see him really coming into his own until next year.

2. Jahvid Best – Detroit Lions

Best will have a great chance at retaining the starting gig in Detroit and the Lions fans haven’t seen speed and quickness like his since Barry Sanders (Don’t’ worry… I’m not comparing).

He has a ton of play-making ability but I do worry about his injury history.

He’s had multiple surgeries in college, and missed the last four games of his senior season because of a concussion.

1. Ryan Mathews – San Diego Chargers

I hate jumping on bandwagons, but Matthews is by far the most talented rookie in the right situation to have the best chance at winning the award.

After the exit of Ladanian Tomlinson, there is only specialty running back Darren Sproles and Mathews left to shoulder the load in San Diego.

Mathews will get at least 200 carries this season and he should rush for 1,000 yards.

If he can produce like that, the 2010-11 NFL betting season Offensive Rookie of the Year Award will be waiting for him.
