The top two contenders in the NFC South meet in a division showdown at the Superdome. The Super Bowl champion Saints have become a fan favorite as their offense can be explosive led by quarterback Drew Brees. However, our NFL betting advice says the Saints have not yet hit their stride averaging just 4.5 and 5.0 yards per play in winning their opening two games while facing a pair of solid and physical defenses in the Vikings and 49ers.

New Orleans’ running game has yet to reach 80 yards rushing in either contest and will now play without Reggie Bush (fibula) for at least the next few weeks. The series history between these division rivals has seen high-scoring games in recent seasons as their last four contests have produced scores of 26-23, 35-27, 29-25 and Atlanta’s lone victory of 34-20. With Atlanta’s no-huddle approach able to minimize defensive substitutions and the Saints quick strike ability, we could see some big plays once again in the passing game to possibly lead to another high scorer.

The Falcons are winless at the Superdome their last six trips, but during their four most recent games with the Saints, the Falcons’ offense has gained at least 360 yards. Atlanta may fare better in defending the Saints attack with the offseason additions of cornerback Dunta Robinson and outside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. The Falcons defensive speed is improved and underrated and should serve them well since the stop unit performs better against stronger offenses like that of the Saints.

Michael Turner should be back in the lineup after leaving last week’s contest (groin). He gained 75 yards in the first half, but Jason Snelling took over and had a career game going off for a pair of touchdowns and 129 yards. With him once again the safety valve, the Falcons running game is in good hands.

Atlanta’s defensive approach in its opening two games has been to stack the line and bring pressure against sub-par quarterbacks. Brees can counter that with his quick and accurate delivery of the ball, but the Falcons will still bring plenty of pressure packages to disrupt the timing.

NFL Insider Tip: The Falcons are 21-4 ATS their last 25 visits to the Superdome while the Saints are just 3-15 ATS as a favorite in their last 18 divisional home games. The Saints are also on an 0-6-1 ATS slide in regular season games with the public piling on. The short week off a physical game Monday night should assist the Falcons as they have the balance and stronger defense this season to knock off the Saints according to our NFL betting advice.

My NFL Predictions: Atlanta Falcons (+3.5) -110
