NFL Betting – Super Bowl XLV Football Futures
May 27, 2010
Nothing gets me more excited for sports betting purposes than NFL football. With the only thing running as we end hockey and basketball, and just begin baseball, why not fill our brains with some futures betting. The odds to win Super Bowl XLV are up, along with some other NFL futures that might catch your fancy. How’s is your team stacking up as we countdown towards the NFL 2010-11 betting season?
THE FAVORITES
1. Indianapolis Colts – +800 To Win Super Bowl XLV
The Colts’ window for repeating this century as a Super Bowl champion is going to start getting smaller and smaller. Peyton Manning is 34-years old and has maybe four years left to capitalize on his talents at the most. I won’t doubt him, but those burned by him in last year’s Super Bowl might not be willing to be scorched again.
2. New Orleans Saints – +900 To Win Super Bowl XLV
The Saints were lucky to get out of Minnesota alive in the playoffs last year, and left little room for the judges and haters to doubt them in the Super Bowl. The question is how they keep a band of youngsters happy on the offensive side with limited contract extensions and a lockout looming in 2011. They will get their first big test when they play the Vikings again to start the 2010 season. Early 2010 Week 1 NFL lines have the champs favored by 4.5 points at home.
3. San Diego Chargers – +900 To Win Super Bowl XLV
C’mon. It’s Norv Turner.
4. New England Patriots – +1000 To Win Super Bowl XLV
Nobody will be willing to venture a bet on the fading star of the Patriots as Belichick gets crazier in his old age and Wes Welker continues to rehab his knee aggressively. This is a “wait and see” value at best.
5. Dallas Cowboys – +1000 To Win Super Bowl XLV
Same as Chargers, except insert “Tony Romo and Wade Phillips”.
THE OUTSIDE SHOTS
6. Green Bay Packers – +1400 To Win Super Bowl XLV
One of the most under celebrated offenses in the league but we still don’t know what of think of Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs.
7. Minnesota Vikings – +1400 To Win Super Bowl XLV
This betting price skyrockets as soon as Brett Favre realizes he’d be bored stiff farming hay on his ranch. If you believe whole heartedly that he’s coming back, then this is one of the best values on the board to grab before he signs.
8. New York Jets – +1400 To Win Super Bowl XLV
The Jets caught everyone off guard last year. They’re not getting away with robbery this year, and even the oddsmakers have drawn a firm line in the sand with their odds to win Super Bowl XLV.
9. Baltimore Ravens – +1400 To Win Super Bowl XLV
I love this young corps of offensive players, especially with Boldin and Stallworth joining the fray. Unfortunately I don’t have the same high regard for the aging defense.
QUARTERBACK PROBLEM BETS
10. Philadelphia Eagles – +1800 To Win Super Bowl XLV
11. Pittsburgh Steelers – +1800 To Win Super Bowl XLV
How much do you believe in the Eagles without Donavan McNabb? More so, do you even have any faith in Ben Roethlisberger from a betting standpoint?
WORTH A LOOK IF YOU’RE FAN
12. New York Giants – +2000
Like Belichick, head coach Tom Coughlin is drinking too much of his own kool-aid. The Giants are suffering it, as is the betting faction that stood by them as they wilted to a 6-9-1 ATS record and missed the playoffs.
13. Atlanta Falcons – +3000
Until the Saints show any signs of weakness, any other team in the NFC South is a strict write-off in terms of Super Bowl XLV betting.
14. Cincinnati Bengals – +3000
The Bengals added Antonio Bryant to the mix and they’re still falling way behind in the pack for NFL futures betting. If you trust the line the oddsmakers set, that’s not a good sign.
15. Tennessee Titans – +3000
This team is insane to not throw as much money as they can at Chris Johnson. You’d probably be insane to throw lots of cash there way in NFL futures betting. The guy this team will miss more is Kyle Vanden Bosch.
THE 50-50 CLUB
16. San Francisco 49ers – +3500
My favorite longshot value on the board. The Niners are poised to take over the NFC West, which is a lot like saying you’re the coolest kid in the chess club. Getting to the playoffs will be the easy part. Being competitive in them is a different story. If any division has produced lucky-as-crap teams in the playoffs, it’s the NFC West (think Cardinals).
17. Chicago Bears – +3500
Jay Cutler is going to walk in to training camp, see the same set of receivers, turn around and scream at the front office, “YOU DIDN’T GET ME ANYONE?!?!?!”
18. Miami Dolphins – +3500
Still not sure why they’re shopping Ronnie Brown. Still not sure what to think about Chad Henne. If you’re convinced that Brandon Marshall is the best receiver in the league, then Miami is a savvy bet. Of course, you’ll only look smart if they can wriggle past the Jets in the AFC East.
19. Houston Texans – +3500
Andre Johnson is holding out and Matt Schaub is one concussion away from being the next Trent Green. I can’t paint a bigger “STAY AWAY” sign on this team.
REBUILDING FRANCHISES YOU SHOULD PASS ON
20. Arizona Cardinals – +4000
21. Carolina Panthers – +4000
22. Washington Redskins – +4000
23. Denver Broncos – +5000
Quarterbacks are the biggest stories for these four teams. The Redskins may have made headlines with the McNabb trade, but that certainly hasn’t swayed the betting public to back the Redskins in Super Bowl XLV betting. It’s probably because he doesn’t have anyone to pass to.
Meanwhile, I’m not willing to bank my future on former college stars Matt Leinart in Arizona, or the Tebow/Quinn two-headed monster in Denver. I don’t know anything about Matt Moore other than that Carolina went 4-1 ATS in the five games he started.
BETTER LUCK NEVER
24. Jacksonville Jaguars +6000
25. Seattle Seahawks – +6000
26. Buffalo Bills – +10000
27. Cleveland Browns – +10000
28. Oakland Raiders – +12500
I’m not even going to bother. These teams will barely be worth a regular season bet let alone a play in futures betting with those kinds of odds to win Super Bowl XLV. If there’s every a collection of five teams worth shoving in to a space shit and shooting in to the sun, it’s these five.
THE FUTURE IS NOW…AS IN 2014
29. Detroit Lions – +15000
30. Kansas City Chiefs – +15000
31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – +15000
32. St. Louis Rams – +20000
Matt Stafford, Matt Cassell, Joshua Freeman and Sam Bradford could very well be at the head of the class in three, four or five NFL betting seasons. As for the 2010-11 edition? No thanks.
