NFL Betting – Philly Tries to Seal Division in New York

December 15, 2010

For those of us who love to bet on NFL games, the NFC East division tilt between the hype train known as the Philadelphia Eagles and the surging New York Giants is the sure-fire Game of the Week. A win for either team will mean that they control their playoff destiny, while the other will be left fighting for the wild card spot.

The problem for the Giants will obviously be an unexpectedly short week, thanks to the Metrodome collapsing in on itself and forcing their game against the Vikings to be played on Monday Night. The suddenly tight schedule is going to make things more daunting for the Giants, who are just 3-4 ATS this season at home and just 4-9 ATS in their last 13 stands in the Meadowlands.

Losing Steve Smith and Mario Manningham could turn out to be disastrous for this Giants squad that is already thin at the receiving corps due to injuries.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the Giants should be dead in the water heading in to the NFL Game of the Week. They’ve trudged along without their top two wideouts – Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks – and the presence of both helped Eli Manning steamroll the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14. Nicks did the brunt of the receiving for New York, totaling 7 catches for 96 yards while Smith had a single catch of 12 yards.

Everyone has fallen asleep on the New York Giants. That much is obvious. The fact that they lost three consecutive games to the spread before thrashing Minnesota and Washington over the past two weeks certainly motivated the NFL betting community to jump off the bandwagon.

A win over the Eagles (+2.5) in the NFL Game of the Week would repopulate that carriage in a damn hurry, but it won’t be easy. Philadelphia is the second-best offense in the league in terms of scoring, notching 28.8 points per game and have looked flat-out resilient since losing in a blowout against Tennessee.

Their only loss over the last six games was against the better-than-we-thought Bears, and they only lost by five measly points in a game that was very much winnable.

For the most part, the public will lean heavily on the Eagles as they have done for over a month. Vick is a game-changer in that regard. This game could easily go either way, but with the Giants (-2.5) playing a very complete brand of football, allowing just 19.2 points per game and 189.0 yards passing when playing at home, don’t fall asleep on them.
