NFL Bets – Who’s Your Pick At Wide Receiver?

September 7, 2010

Ready to get in your NFL bets? The wait is over, with the season just a few days away.

But rather than wagering on the point spread or over/under, why not invest your money on some season long futures bets?

Here are some head-to-head wide receiver wagers to keep your eye on:

More Touchdown Receptions:

Larry Fitzgerald: -1 ½ Touchdowns (-120)
Mikes Austin: +1 ½ Touchdowns (-110)

This futures wager pits arguably the NFL’s best receiver a year ago, against last season’s most surprising pass catcher. So who’ll be your pick: Larry Fitzgerald or Miles Austin?

Before you pick Fitzgerald, understand that there are some concerns about him heading into 2010. The first is that he comes into this season off a major preseason injury. He could be ready to go this Sunday, but his knee will hardly be 100 percent. How will he respond?

More importantly though, this is a completely new offense he’s playing in. Gone is veteran Kurt Warner, and in his place is the wildly inconsistent Derek Anderson. Also, Fitzgerald’s right-hand man- Anquan Boldin- is now catching passes in Baltimore, not the desert. What’s going to happen when defenses start double and triple teaming him?

At the same time, Austin comes into this season with questions of his own. Can a guy who had never caught more than 13 balls coming into last year possibly match an 81 catch, 11 touchdown season? Especially as the Dallas offense continues to evolve, with the addition of first round pick Dez Bryant?

This is a tough one, but we’ll take Fitzgerald by the NFL bets. Yes he comes in with a quite a few questions, but at the same time, there is no doubt he’s the key to this offense. Austin is great, but could find himself in a complimentary role, as Tony Romo will likely spread the touchdowns between three or four receivers.

The Pick: Larry Fitzgerald -1 ½ touchdowns (-120)

More Touchdown Receptions:

Brandon Marshall: -1 Touchdown (-110)
Calvin Johnson:
+1 Touchdown (-120)

Enigmatic wide receiver Brandon Marshall has a new home coming into this fall, after previously spending his entire career in Denver. But now in Miami, should he be one of your NFL bets?

You could certainly do much worse, as Marshall is coming off a 101 catch, 10 touchdown season with the Broncos a year ago. More importantly, he was specifically traded to the Dolphins to fill a major void in their 20th ranked passing game. No receiver on their roster had more than three touchdown catches last year, if you can believe that. The opportunities will certainly be there for Marshall to have a monster season.

On the other hand, Johnson is most definitely a stud in Detroit, averaging 14.7 yards per catch, but he is also a concern. He missed two games last year with injury, and even when he played, caught just five touchdowns. Then again, his quarterback Matthew Stafford was also a rookie, and will almost certainly be improved.

Still, when looking at the NFL bets, go ahead and take Marshall. We all know he’s enigmatic, moody and sometimes just downright tough to deal with. But the guy performs on Sunday’s. He’ll do that all season long, and that’s why you should make him your pick today!

The Pick: Brandon Marshall -1 Receiving Touchdown (-110)
