NFL Bets – The Last of the Unbeaten Teams

October 2, 2010

If I said four weeks ago that after week 3, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Bears would be the last remaining unbeaten teams in the NFL, I’m sure the response would contain words like crazy and idiot. There would also be questions about my smoking habits, but here we have three surprising teams all perfect.

The Bears are the least surprising of the remaining unbeaten teams. The team brought in a super group of former head coaches to assist Lovie Smith, and the Bears made the biggest splash in free agency by adding all-pro defensive end Julius Peppers. But with the Packers coming early on the schedule nobody was predicting a 0-3 start. The Bears are 2-1 against the spread.

Pittsburgh has a hell of a defense but even the most ardent Steelers fan didn’t expect a 3-0 start. Starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is serving a four-game suspension and two of his backups, Dennis Dixon and Byron Leftwich, suffered injuries. The Steelers have held their opponents to just two touchdowns with both coming in the final two minutes, after the games were already out of reach.

The Chiefs finished the last two seasons with four wins each. So for them to win their first three games has shocked the football world. They were underdogs in all three games so they are perfect against the spread. The Chiefs have victories over the Chargers, Browns and 49ers. The 49ers and the Chargers were the NFL odds makers’ favorites to win the NFC West and AFC West respectively. The defense is the story in KC, the team is all over the field, pressuring quarterbacks and forcing opponents into mistakes. The atmosphere at the New Arrowhead Stadium is proving to be one of the best home field advantages in the league.

While it was unlikely that these teams would be 3-0 right now, it’s even more unlikely they will finish with a perfect record. Let’s explore the teams upcoming games and try to predict which team will be the last ones standing with a perfect record.

The Chicago Bears weren’t supposed to get past the Packers but thanks to some undisciplined play by Green Bay’s offensive line, the Bears have a chance to run stack up wins. They are underdogs in week 4 when they travel to the New Meadowlands to take on the New York Giants. I like the Bears in this game. The Giants defense has been playing poorly and that means good things for Jay Cutler and the Bears. Chicago doesn’t have another tough game until they host Minnesota in week 10. If they hadn’t been upset by then, their first loss could come against the Vikings.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing with the houses money right now but that could end this week against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens offense is getting going with Joe Flacco and Anquan Bolden connecting three times for touchdowns last week. Charlie Batch was excellent last week against the Buccaneers but the Ravens have a much better team on both sides of the ball. The Steelers will lose this Sunday but if you told Steelers fans their team would be 3-1 during Roethlisberger’s absence they’d happily take it.

The Kansas City Chiefs are on a bye this week and when they get back from the break they’ll have the Indianapolis Colts waiting for them. I like the Chiefs a lot and looking at their remaining home schedule, they could win 7 of 8 at the New Arrowhead but the Colts are on another level. The Chiefs run ends at three wins.

All three teams could lose their next games but the Bears have the best chance to continue their early season success.
