NFC Update – Rams and Lions Rule NFL Betting ATS
November 17, 2010
The Detroit Lions and the St. Louis Rams rule NFL betting when it comes to wagering on teams against the spread.
The Rams are #1 on my NFC Top 5 list while the Lions clock in at #2 this week. The Bottom 5 still boasts Carolina and Dallas in the top 2 spots but kudos must go out to Dallas for coming up huge this past Sunday in New York.

I also want to write that everybody needs to take a deep breath after Michael Vick accounted for 6 touchdowns in the Eagles huge victory over the Washington Redskins this past Monday night. Vick was great but some very good teams are getting better. The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons both have decent defenses and Vick might not have the same success with those runs against Green Bay LB Clay Matthews the way he did against Washington LB Rocky McIntosh.
Everybody relax. The Eagles beat the Redskins.
Let’s get to the NFC Top 5 and NFC Bottom 5 for this week!
NFC Top 5 NFL Betting
- St. Louis Rams 4-5 (7-2 ATS) – - Yes, the Rams lost to the 49’ers this past Sunday but they lost in overtime, 20 to 23, to a team that was favored by 4 ½ points in the NFC betting sportsbook to beat them. They definitely deserve this spot over Detroit because their straight up record puts them into the thick of the NFC West race.
- Detroit Lions 2-7 (7-2 ATS) – - The Lions finally failed ATS for only the second time this season when the Buffalo Bills notched their first win of the season 14 to 12. The Lions ATS loss was by only ½ a point, though, because the Bills were giving up 1 ½ in that game. Detroit should get Matthew Stafford back and even if they don’t back-up QB Shaun Hill won’t be injured as much this Sunday as he was last Sunday.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6-3 (6-3 ATS) – - The Buccaneers continue to impress. As 7-point favorites over the horrible Carolina Panthers, the Buccaneers dominated in a 31 to 16 victory. The Buccaneers have now covered in 4 out of their last 6 games, including 3 covers in a row.
- Atlanta Falcons 7-2 (5-4 ATS) – - As only 1 point favorites, the Atlanta Falcons looked like straight up losers with 1:05 to go in the 4th quarter of their game versus the Baltimore Ravens last Thursday night. Then, somehow, someway, the Ravens allowed WR Roddy White behind the defense for a 33-yard TD grab. That put the Falcons at 5 and 4 ATS and at a sterling 7 and 2 straight up record.
- Green Bay Packers 6-3 (5-4 ATS) – - Green Bay was on a bye this past week. Although the Eagles looked fantastic, and murdered the odds in the NFL betting sportsbook to get to 5 and 4 ATS, this past Monday night, I’m keeping Green Bay where they were last week. The Packers are clearly the class of the NFC North Division this season.
NFC Bottom 5 NFL Betting
- Carolina Panthers 1-8 (2-7 ATS) – - They were down to their 3rd string running back, but, still. I don’t believe the Buccaneers have ever been this high and the Panthers this low in the history of the Carolina Panthers’ franchise.
- Dallas Cowboys 2-7 (2-7 ATS) – - That was a sensational victory, Cowboys. Punishing the New York Giants with 33 points, in a 33 to 14 victory as 13 ½ point dogs, is impressive, but it was only one game. Let’s see how you fair versus the Detroit Lions as 6 ½ point favorites this Sunday.
- Minnesota Vikings 3-6 (2-7 ATS) – - It took Favre magic to get the victory over Arizona at home, but Brett had no magic this past Sunday in the 13 to 27 loss to the Chicago Bears. Look, nobody on this team cares, okay? Coach Brad Childress doesn’t care. QB Brett Favre doesn’t care. Maybe, maybe, RB Adrian Peterson and DE Jared Allen care just a little bit, but those two are the only ones. Green Bay at -3 over the Vikings this Sunday is already the best bet in the NFL betting sportsbook in my opinion.
- San Francisco 49’ers 3-6 (3-6 ATS) – - The San Francisco 49’ers have won 2 games in a row, but I’m not sure if anybody should be too impressed just yet. The Niners take on the Buccaneers this Saturday. One thing I do like is how new starting QB Troy Smith is keeping the team out of trouble. He hasn’t thrown a pick yet and has a 116 passer rating.
- Arizona Cardinals 3-6 (3-6 ATS) – - Arizona is just awful. Just awful. I love how the Cardinals were actually favored by 3 ½ points to beat Seattle this past Sunday. Favored! Seattle destroyed AZ 38 to 16.
