NFC Update – Philly Still Not in my NFC NFL Betting Top 5
November 23, 2010
The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants 27 to 17 to win their second game straight up and against the spread, but they still didn’t get into my NFC NFL betting Top 5.
The Eagles are only 5 and 5 ATS even though they’ve won 3 games in a row after their bye week and are 7 and 3 straight up on the season. The Eagles have become the favorite for most NFL prognosticators regarding the team that goes to the Super Bowl from the NFC.
I’m not ready to say that they go to the big game this season, but I have to admit that Michael Vick and that offense is pretty darn scary when it gets going. In any case, let’s get to the NFC Top 5 and NFC Bottom 5 for this week!

NFC Top 5 NFL Betting
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7-3 (7-3 ATS) – - The 21 to 0 victory over San Francisco as a 3 ½ point dog in SF may be a watershed game for this young, scrappy bunch. 7 and 3 both straight and against the spread in the NFL betting sportsbook makes them the best team in the NFC right now…period.
- St. Louis Rams 4-6 (7-3 ATS) – - St. Louis’ 17 to 34 loss ATS was their first ATS loss in their last 5 games. They are obviously a decent team, but Atlanta exposed their defense this past Sunday. The Rams hit the road for 3 straight games starting this week. We’ll see if they’ve got what it takes to stay in the Top 5.
- Detroit Lions 2-8 (7-3 ATS) – - The 19 to 35 loss to Dallas was the Lions first big loss this season since their 10 to 24 bummer versus Minnesota in Week 3. Detroit faces New England off of a short week on Thanksgiving Day this Thursday. They’re receiving only 7 points in that game to New England but I still believe that they have what it takes to cover the NFL betting odds in the sportsbook.
- Atlanta Falcons 8-2 (6-4 ATS) – - The Falcons face a tough Green Bay team at home before taking on the Buccaneers for what might be the lead in the NFC South Division. The Dirty Birds, as us Saints fans like to call them, were brilliant when beating a good St. Louis team by 17 points as only 3 ½ point road favorites. Their 24th ranked pass defense might get into some trouble versus Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers and his bevy of wide receivers this week.
- Green Bay Packers 7-3 (6-4 ATS) – - The Packers have won 4 games in a row including absolutely dominating the Minnesota Vikings 31 to 3 as 3-point road favorites. Minnesota didn’t step up for that game, but it’s obvious that the Packers have gotten better. They’ve outscored their last 3 opponents, the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, and Minnesota Vikings, by a combined 85 to 10 and have covered 4 straight games in the football betting sportsbook.
NFC Bottom 5 NFL Betting
- Carolina Panthers 1-9 (2-8 ATS) – - Another game and another loss straight up and ATS. This time the Ravens got to pound the Panthers 37 to 13 as 13-point favorites. Carolina started some dude named Brian St. Pierre at QB. He produced a 48.7 rating. I think I’d make Boise State a -2 ½ point favorite over Carolina if they had to play the Bucs instead of Nevada this Friday night.
- Minnesota Vikings 3-7 (2-8 ATS) – - The Vikings fired Brad Childress as coach this morning, Monday, Nov. 22nd, after their horrible loss to Green Bay. They should also fire QB Brett Favre and go after QB Tarvaris Jackson…oh, wait, he’s already with them. Yeah, maybe I was right at the beginning of the season when I said that the Vikings should start Jackson over Favre.
- San Francisco 49’ers 3-7 (3-7 ATS) – - After producing a 115.2 and a 116.7 QB rating, 49’ers signal-caller Troy Smith produced a 51.5 QB rating after throwing for only 148 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. The 49’ers officially suck after the 0 to 21 loss to Tampa Bay.
- Dallas Cowboys 3-7 (3-7 ATS) – - They’ve won 2 games in a row both straight and versus the NFL betting odds. The ‘Boys still have a lot of ground to make up to get off of this list. They face the surging New Orleans Saints, who are riding a 3 game winning streak and get Reggie Bush back this week, on Thanksgiving Thursday.
- Arizona Cardinals 3-7 (3-7 ATS) – - The Cardinals flat out suck. Kansas City got back onto the winning track specifically because they played the Arizona Cardinals this past Sunday. AZ lost 13 to 31 as 9-point dogs versus the Chiefs. Although Arizona plays SF twice and Carolina once in 3 out of their final 6 games this season, they may not actually win another game until 2011. AZ is god awful.
