NFC Update – Bucs and Lions are Money
October 12, 2010
After Week 5 it’s become apparent that not all is correct in the NFC. Although there’s plenty of time for things to shake out what many NFL betting fans might consider the right way, the fact that The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears, three less than stellar teams against the spread from a year ago, are in the Top 5 has to have football handicappers scratching their heads.
The other fact, that the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints are in the Bottom 5, has to have football handicappers wondering if this is the same league as it was in 2009. When it comes to NFL betting, the Vikings, ‘Boys and Saints were money for most of last season.

Let’s get to the NFC Top 5 and the NFC Bottom 5!
NFC Top 5 NFL Betting
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3-1 (3-1 ATS) – - The victory over Cincinnati was legitimate. Now, they face the Saints as dogs against the spread, then St. Louis, then the Cardinals. This team could be 6 and 1 straight up and 6 and 1 ATS (the Saints are suffering through some major injuries and could lose to the Bucs on Sunday) before taking on Atlanta for the NFC South lead in Week 9.
- Detroit Lions 1-4 (4-1 ATS) – - They finally broke through with a victory when destroying St. Louis 44 to 6 this past Sunday. If WR Calvin Johnson isn’t hurt, expect them to be tough from here on out. The spread-covering machine could keep going as they are big time dogs, once again, this Sunday versus the New York Giants.
- Atlanta Falcons 4-1 (3-2 ATS) – - When it comes to football betting, Atlanta may end up being the team to stay away from in the next few weeks. Already everybody’s talking about how great of a team they are. Talk leads to big wagering spread. Trying to cover big wagering spreads lead to losses ATS.
- Chicago Bears 4-1 (3-2 ATS) – - Da Bears are favored by 7 points over Seattle this week. I’m not sold on them covering a large spread versus a better than expected ‘Hawks team because QB Jay Cutler may still be injured.
- New York Giants 3-2 (3-2 ATS) – - I hate that they’re favored by 10 points to beat Detroit this Sunday, but if anybody’s going to cover a double-digit spread against the Lions, it’s this team. The defense has become incredible. The offense is clicking about as well as any in the NFL right now. This team is the best in the NFC in my opinion, but that doesn’t make them the best team on which to wager against the spread. Still, they’re a scary team to bet against.
NFC Bottom 5 NFL Betting
- Carolina Panthers 0-5 (1-4 ATS) – - Thank the Lord for the bye week! Nobody can lose money on these guys. Then again, nobody can win money by making wagers in the NFL betting sportsbook against them either.
- Minnesota Vikings 1-3 (1-3 ATS) – - Randy Moss or no Randy Moss, this team has a big, big issue at the QB position. For all of his greatness, Brett Favre still makes bad decisions when things are most on the line. And, let’s be honest, the Vikings’ D kept them in that game against the Jets, not Favre and Moss.
- Dallas Cowboys 1-3 (1-3 ATS) – - The ‘Boys face the Vikings in Minnesota this Sunday. A line hasn’t been set, but I’m leaning towards taking the football betting points and backing the ‘Boys in that game. Why? Because they’re way more desperate than the Vikings who still are playing on offense as if they deserve to win not like they have to win.
- New Orleans Saints 3-2 (1-4 ATS) – - If the Saints can escape with a victory over the Buccaneers on Sunday, then they could still win the NFC South. Reggie Bush returns in November. Free safety Darren Sharper returns later this month and so does DE Will Smith. RB Pierre Thomas should be healthy soon as well. This team has a shot to turn things around. Now, as far as betting on them against the spread goes…
- San Francisco 49’ers 0-5 (2-3 ATS) – - Are NFL betting odds makers out of their minds? SF is a 6 ½ point favorite over Oakland this Sunday. That’s laughable. Football handicappers just found their team to bet on straight up for Sunday. I’ll leave it at that.
