NFC Showdown Carolina vs New York

December 18, 2008

Carolina Panthers vs. New York Giants 8:15 ET

All the marbles will be on the line in the NFC for NBC’s Sunday Night Football telecast from Giants Stadium allowing BetOnline customers to sink their teeth into this crucial NFC showdown when the NFC South leading Carolina Panthers (11-3, 8-5-1 ATS) do battle with the NFC East champion New York Giants (11-3, 10-4 ATS). The winner of this game will earn the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs regardless of what happens in Week 17.

Carolina has the added incentive that a pair of teams (Atlanta/Tampa Bay) could still track them down for NFC South supremacy. The last regular season meeting between these two clubs was in 2006, when the G-Men marched into Carolina and whooped up on the Panthers 27-13. The previous meeting in the Meadowlands was a playoff game back in ’06, when the Panthers shut out the Giants 23-0.

Is there a team in the NFL playing better football than the Carolina Panthers right now? In Week 15, the Panthers notched yet another impressive victory over a likely playoff team when they beat the Broncos 30-10. RBs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams were once again very impressive combining for 140 yards on 28 carries with a touchdown each. Stewart is 250 yards shy of the 1,000-yard plateau, while Williams has rushed for 1,229 yards to date.

The Panthers are now 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS in their L/8 games, and have been a dominant offensive squad of late. The unit is averaging 32.4 points per game in its L/5 overall games, and has reached the 27-point plateau in seven out of its L/8. The defense hasn’t been too shabby either, as it ranks 6th in the NFL allowing just 18.9 points per game.

While things are looking up for Carolina, no one figured the Giants would be in a position of getting run down from behind after opening up the season 11-1. Even though no one in HC Tom Coughlin’s locker room will admit it, the offense really misses WR Plaxico Burress. After scoring at least 21 points in all but two games this season before losing the superstar wide receiver, the Giants put up their second dud in a row by losing 20-8 in Dallas.

QB Eli Manning tossed a pair of picks and only threw for 191 total yards, but was still named to the Pro Bowl this week. Without RB Brandon Jacobs in the lineup, the rushing game has struggled, RBs Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw only combined for 72 yards. Giants’ bettors have to be disappointed with the fact that the offense only has one touchdown in the last 9.5 quarters of play and that touchdown came in garbage time against the Eagles two weeks ago.

The oddsmakers seem weary about New York’s recent woes, as they have only made the defending champs three-point choices on the football betting line. The ‘total’ currently sits at 37.5.
