This team-by-team division breakdown will point enthusiastic pro football betting buffs in the right direction toward making a plethora of payday-producing picks on every NFC North team all season long.
Minnesota Vikings +130
(O/U) 9.5 Wins
The Vikings went 12-4 to win the NFC North last season and will have an excellent shot of doing so again – once they have Brett Favre back in the fold that is.
The Vikes are loaded on both sides of the ball and made a couple of decent moves to address its uninspiring pass defense from last season by adding veteran cornerback Lito Sheppard and defensive end Mike Montgomery, in free agency.
I think the Vikings will need to get back to running the ball a bit more than they did in the latter part of last season, but overall, this team is going to be extremely tough to keep out of the end zone, particularly with a more experienced Percy Harvin.
After looking at Minnesota’s 2010 regular season, I am going on record to say that Minnesota will easily top their 9.5-win O/U total. The Vikings have a very tough schedule, but I believe they will be up to the task of recording double digit victories at the least. I like Minnesota to record four division wins while weeping Detroit and splitting with Green Bay and Chicago while also winning at home against Miami, Dallas, Arizona, Buffalo and New York while also winning at Philly and Detroit at the very least.
Green Bay Packers +125
(O/U) 9.5 Wins
The Packers went a stellar 11-5 last season and have been installed as the odds-on-favorite to win the NFC North in 2010, in large part because they fielded a top-five defense and offense last season and have one of the game’s best quarterbacks in pro bowler Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers are my top favorite to come out of the NFC this season even though I believe they are once again going to narrowly fail to beat out Minnesota for the NFC North division title this season for one simple reason – their schedule is just a wee bit harder than Minnesota’s.
I like the Pack to win at Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington and Detroit at the least while recording home wins against the Bills, Lions, Dolphins, Niners and Giants while splitting with the Vikings at the very least to give them at least 10 wins and an easy Over against their 9.5-game NFL Futures O/U total. Three matchups against the AFC East (Patriots, Bills, Dolphins) will definitely turn out to be tough contests that could go either way.
Chicago Bears +350
O/U 8 Wins
The Bears won seven games last season but I’m not sure they’ve improved their roster, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, in order to make a big improvement in 2010.
The Bears don’t stand a chance of surpassing either Minnesota or Green Bay for division supremacy and I believe Chicago will be hard-pressed to top its 8-win O/U total. I think the Bears could suffer home losses to the Jets and Patriots in addition to division losses against Green Bay, Minnesota which could turn out to be season sweeps while also suffering road losses at Dallas, New York and Miami that has me believing they will record their second consecutive 7-9 regular season record or go 8- 8 in a best-case scenario. If I’m making this wager, I play the Under against the NFL Futures O/U total.
Detroit Lions +2000
O/U 5 Wins
The Lions won two games last season but have a good shot at increasing their win total after improving their team through the draft and free agency.
While Detroit won’t compete for a division title, the Lions will undoubtedly be better on defense after drafting game-changing nose tackle Ndamukong Suh with the second overall pick and now have a franchise running back in 30th overall pick, Jahvid Best.
I’m like Matt Stafford to lead the Lions to home wins over St. Louis and Chicago (and possibly Philadelphia) while also giving the Bills and Buccaneers a very tough way to go on the road.
Unfortunately for Lions fans, I think Detroit’s regular season schedule is absolutely treacherous as they have non-division games against the entire NFC East, while also facing playoff-caliber ballclubs in AFC East residents, New England, Miami and New York.
In the end, I’m going to play the Minnesota Vikings to narrowly win the NFC North for the third consecutive season while the Vikes and Packers both play Over their season-long win totals while the Lions and Bears play Under theirs.
