NCAAF Odds Busters – Notre Dame Gets Monster Number Against Broncos

October 16, 2010

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are slamming in to massive NCAAF betting odds this weekend when they host the lowly Western Michigan Broncos. Considering that Notre Dame is just 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games at home, you should be quivering in your man boots if you’re thinking about the -24.0 home line they’re getting at Notre Dame Stadium.

Despite posting an even 3-3 SU record, Notre Dame is actually a bit better than you’d expect. They’re coming off two convincing wins against Boston College and Pittsburgh, and while neither of those teams hold the same name value that they used to, they’re still pretty strong programs.

Notre Dame is 3-2-1 ATS this season, but have played some very powerful teams this season and are bearing with the transition period of a new head coach as well.

It takes a few years for a new head coach to properly sink his teeth in to a football program, but for what it’s worth, coach Brian Kelly is getting quite a bit out of junior quarterback Dayne Crist. The Canoga Park, California native has 1600 passing yards this season with 11 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions.

Western Michigan Broncos (2-3) vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-3)

Saturday, October 16th — Notre Dame Stadium — 2:30pm EST

NCAAF Odds: Notre dame -24.0 (52.0)

At 6-foot-4 and a hefty 235 pounds, Crist is a prototypically built quarterback and he’s playing like one. The Irish have lost games because they’ve played stiff competition. You can’t exactly hold it against them for losing to three ranked teams like Michigan, Michigan State and Stanford.

Western Michigan is just 2-4 SU in their last 6 games and are 3-9 SU and ATS in their past 12 games on the road. They’re a horrible team when it comes to covering any NCAAF odds as well, which their 1-3 ATS record this season indicates.

The problem in this game is that Western Michigan actually has a fairly potent offense. They post 29.0 points per game and have averaged 274.2 yards passing with quarterback Alex Carder who is also a dangerous threat on the ground. Carder blew away Ball State on the road last weekend with 265 passing yards while scoring 4 touchdowns, 3 of which were scored on the ground.

I like Notre Dame on the whole, but these NCAAF lines are too heavy to wager against considering how badly Notre Dame has been at home against the number. Western Michigan isn’t a team that can pose an upset, but they can certainly give Notre Dame’s defense a tougher fight than anyone would expect.

Don’t blame Crist or Kelly when the Broncos cover in this game. They have a strong offense, but Western Michigan’s is being sold up the river. The Broncos will produce enough points with a balanced offense to cover the NCAAF odds in a loss to the Fighting Irish.
