NCAAF Odds Busters – North Carolina State vs. Georgia Tech

September 25, 2010

The North Carolina State Wolfpack have been NCAAF odds busters thus far with a clean 2-0 ATS record in their past three games, but get their first real taste of action when they clash with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. While Tech is a deserving favorite in this game, it’s largely because people will underestimate NC State out of the ACC.

The Wolfpack have toppled some bad teams, but their +19.7 point differential deserves some credit. What they do very well is run the scoreboard, and a balanced offense has scored 5 rushing touchdowns and 8 receiving scores. Quarterback Russell Wilson deserves praise for what he’s managed to do for the Wolfpack. Thus far he has 744-yards passing and a quarterback rating of 144.45.

Which is right where you should expect the junior quarterback to be. Last year he totaled 31 touchdowns, and that was offset by just 11 picks. And even though North Carolina State has gone just 2-3-1 ATS in their last 6 roadies with Russell at the helm, the game against Georgia Tech is one they can win.

Of course, it doesn’t help that Tech is 4-1 SU when playing North Carolina State while also clearing the NCAAF odds against them by going 4-1 ATS during those five games as well. Tech is 6-2 SU in their last 8 home games and are a strong 11-3 SU in their last 14 games overall.

North Carolina State Wolfpack (3-0) vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-1)

NCAAF Odds: Georgia Tech -8.5 (52.5)

Still, the straight up victory is hard to gamble with Tech’s single minded offense. The NCAAF odds and that -8.5 line for Georgia Tech makes me nervous. Quarterback Joshua Nesbitt has been a hero for them thus far, and piled up 76 passing yards and another 104 on the ground while scoring a pair of touchdowns against UNC last weekend.

North Carolina State’s 55th ranked passing defense won’t have to worry too much about Nesbitt throwing since he’s only attempted a 25 passes thus far (200 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 pick) but their 12th ranked rushing defense should bolster some hopes against the lines.

So should Russell Wilson’s versatility. Like the Wolfpack, the Jackets are extremely good at covering the pass allowing just 94.0 yards against through the air but Wilson’s ability to rush and pass should make this a fair game. I like Wilson a lot, and the fact is that the betting public will glance at this game, say “The North Carolina State who?” and side with the Jackets.

But Tech has some glaring weaknesses, and I don’t like one trick ponies in football all that much (Army being the lone exception). Tech hasn’t proven a penchant for throwing the ball, which is what you need to do to mask your offense and come from behind. When the Wolfpack open up a lead, I’m not sure Tech can do enough offensively to stop Wilson from beating up their defense and the NCAAF odds.
