NCAAF Betting Tips – UTEP a Lock Over Rice
October 8, 2010
We’re back for more NCAAF Betting Tips, this week featuring another showdown between two Texas teams in Week 6. The 1-4 Rice Owls take on the 4-1 Texas- El Paso Miners from the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas in a Conference USA showdown. The Owls are having a terrible time of it this year and will have their hands full on Saturday night with the NCAAF Betting Line set at -9 ½ for the home team with a total set at 58 ½.
Rice Owls vs. UTEP Miners (Cotton Bowl – Dallas, TX)
Saturday October 9th at 12 PM ET
TV: FSN
NCAAF Betting Spread:
Rice – PS +9 ½ (-110) ML +300
UTEP – PS -9½ (-110) ML -370
Total – 58 ½
These teams are going in completely opposite directions as while Rice is looking to avoid their fourth straight loss, UTEP will be going for their fourth win in a row. They won a road game against a tough New Mexico squad last week 38-20, and in doing so built up all kinds of momentum coming into this conference showdown.

It’s been the offensive performance of this team that has UTEP at 4-1 on the year. They’re averaging 424 yards of offence per game which is good for 36th in the nation. And although some might say that would put them in the middle of the pack, when you consider how poorly Rice has been moving the ball, UTEP looks pretty good.
The offensive struggles all stem from Rice’s inability to run the football. They are averaging 98.4 yards per game on the ground which puts them way down in 105th in the nation, and when you can’t run the ball, it makes throwing the ball that much harder. With that being said, their quarterback, Nick Fanuzzi, hasn’t done anything to help pick up his team as he has just one touchdown pass compared to six interceptions.
Here are some NCAAF Betting Trends for this matchup:
- Owls are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
- Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
- Underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
- Miners are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game.
- Miners are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 conference games.
The inconsistency of the Owls is what makes giving NCAAF Betting Tips on them so difficult. Well, that statement isn’t really true because they have shown some consistency; the only problem is that it’s been that they’ve been consistently bad. UTEP is playing in front of their home crowd and is fresh off a big road win, so all the momentum is on their side. It’s just a guessing game for Rice at the moment, and that’s not a good way to win games.
NCAAF Betting Tips: UTEP (-9 ½)
