NCAA Tournament Online Betting – Checks Out Trends for Some of the 64 Participants
March 17, 2011
Before engaging in NCAA Tournament online betting this year, maybe it makes sense to check out some of the betting trends that are associated with the 64 participants in the Big Dance. As you do, you’ll find that some schools, like mid-major entry Butler, have done very well, while others, like BYU, featuring Jimmer Fredette, have not fared well at all, covering just one game in the last ten seasons as far as NCAA Tournament online betting is concerned.
Let’s take a look at some highlights (or for some programs, lowlights):
* If you are looking for a program that has had the most consistent performance in terms of winning games over the last ten years, you may want to take a look at Kansas, which has gone 26-9 SU in the Big Dance over that period. The Jayhawks have been solid, if not spectacular, in NCAA Tournament online betting over that time, going 16-13-1 ATS.
* In its last 13 games as a favorite, Ohio State, which is the #1 overall seed in this year’s tourney, is a pitiful 2-10-1 ATS in NCAA Tournament online betting.
* If you are looking for a team that has truly overachieved against the number, you can look at West Virginia, which is 12-3-1 ATS, including 6-1 ATS in NCAA Tournament online betting.
* Xavier, which lays 2.5 points to Marquette in an opening round game, has been an outstanding favorite, going 6-0-2 ATS. The other two Atlantic 10 participants, Temple and Richmond, have gone a combined 3-6 ATS in NCAA Tournament online betting.
* BYU, which comes in as a #2 seed in the Southeast region and lays 8.5 points to Wofford in its opening round game, has been dismal, losing seven of eight game straight-up in the Big Dance over the last ten years, and going just 1-6-1 ATS when it comes to the numbers in NCAA Tournament online betting. Is it any wonder that many pundits are touting Wofford as a possible upset special in the first round?
* You might expect that Butler, which made the big move last year in advancing to the title game, has often benefited from not getting enough respect from Big Dance oddsmakers. The Bulldogs have been a very solid 11-6 straight-up in this event since 2001, and they have also covered 12 of those 17 games in NCAA Tournament online betting. This year they open up with a very competitive game in the Southeast region against Old Dominion.
* Tom Izzo has taken his Michigan State program to the Final Four six times, including the last two seasons. You can see that his team has done very well, both straight-up and against the number. Michigan State has won 23 of 33 games, and they have also gone 20-13 ATS, including 11-5 as a favorite.
* If Georgetown gets to the point where it is a double-digit favorite, keep in mind that the Hoyas have gone 4-0 ATS in their last four in that role, in NCAA Tournament online betting. Such a scenario is not likely, unless Chris Wright, who’s been out, comes back from his injury with a vengeance.
* Syracuse lays 11.5 points in its first round game against Indiana State, and the Orange has been pretty solid when laying points, covering eight of its last 12 outings.
* North Carolina has won five national titles, and two of those have come during the last decade. The Tar Heels have been sizzling when it comes to covering the NCAA Tournament online betting odds, going 18-8 ATS during that period.
